I doubt this is ever going to get going.

I think it'll happen. Prime opportunity for one of these younger aspiring guys to come in and direct.. Del Toro's best stuff is his personal labors of love rather than his hired-gun jobs. No big deal here..

    Where is the audience though?

I loved the LOTR trilogy by Jackson.

The fact that such a fantasy classic got made and made so well was a rarity. The anticipation over 3 years to see them all was a worldwide yearly event.

Now the Hobbit seems to have lost it's appeal.

It's a prequel, the director is not Peter Jackson, the director is unknown,it's taking forever.

This movie has missed it's window IMO.

Childress, I disagree. LOTR has a cult following to this day. While it has died down some, I believe that if this were to come out, people would come out of the wood works to see it. It might not be as good, but would make tons of money.

Every time Tolkien pops up there's an audience. I'm sure most here won't remember but the old The Hobbit cartoon that came out 30 years ago was a huge deal as well.
Built in audience no matter when it comes out..

I saw the original, had the album, memorized the dialogue, bought the book for my father at the elementary school book fair... though he was unfamiliar and thought it a children's story, he got hooked, bought LOTR, then got the leather/gold boxed set with The Silmarillion, then Ralph Bakshi wrecked that train and it had to be returned to Rankin/Bass- an appropriate name for that company and it's interpretation.

I've found Tolkien is a very dry read, but whatever comes up in terms of the LOTR or the Hobbit, people will show up.
