    Wasting a Pick: 2nd & 3rd Round QBs

I see alot of people saying that the Titans should take a QB round 2 or 3. Why? According to history it's very unlikely that you will get a franchise QB in the 2nd-3rd round. Below is every single QB taken in the 2nd or 3rd round since 1992.

Out of those QBs, there is TWO franchise QBs (Brees and Schuab). Not to mention Drew Brees struggled a while, until Rivers was drafted; also Drew was taken #32, which is a 1st rounder now. So out of 41 QBs, 2 have been "franchise QBs", so we have a 4.88% chance of getting a legit QB in the 2nd or 3rd round. Sure you also risk wasting a 1st round (and money) on a QB and end up with a Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, or JaMarcus Russell... but that's a chance you'll probably have to take if you want a franchise QB.

So do we risk taking a 1st round QB this year? Hopefully not. This is why the Titans need to explore other options at QB, and not in the NFL draft. McNabb, Orton, or whoever... No QB in this draft is worth the #8 spot. I'm not going to lie though, I really want Christian Ponder in the 3rd round, will he turn out to our answer at QB? Probably not.

Is it possible that the 1st round guys are more likely to get a "fair" shake because the team is more deeply invested in them (both financially and reputation-wise). How many of these guys were bailed on after a year? How many first rounders get bailed on after a year?

And, I made this point in the other thread. Teams are more invested in 1st round draft picks, therefore they are given more chances. You think VY would've played for 5 years if he had been drafted in the 3rd round? I can use Jimmy Clausen as an example. He was drafted in the 2nd round, he would've been dumped for Luck immediately. Had he been drafted in the 1st round, I think Carolina would've looked to trade their pick. I think it would be better to compare 2nd and 3rd round QBs with at least 2 years of starting experience.

I am not sure who has been saying that you plan to draft your "Franchise QB" in the 2nd or 3rd round, but I have not been one of them.

Taking a look at the list, and dropping the requirement of "Franchise QB" from the list of requirements, I see plenty of players who have had respectable pro careers as starters, backups, or combination of the two. Heck...Todd Collins (1994) will be suiting up in the NFC Championship Game this year (albeit as a backup...for the 17th season). Also, Jake Plummer was very close to being a "Franchise QB" (leading the Arizona Cardinals to their first postseason victory since Truman was president, then leading the Broncos to deep playoff runs in the early part of this decade, until his mourning over Pat Tillman's death ended his career).

I guess my point here is that I agree that there are no real franchise QBs in the draft this year, and we should not draft a QB at #8, BUT, if there is a serviceable QB out there who we could count on as a reliable backup or spot starter during this period where our best options involve free agent QBs who are a bit "long in the tooth", we should explore it.
