    Thoughts? Watching currently.

I watch with a checklist almost in my head. "Most overrated film due for award", "Most overrated actor that's the clear favorite for some unknown reason", "The 2 people I want to win", "Weird foreign films that no one in attendance has actually seen but must pretend so in order to seem authentic", etc.

Basically tonight I've only got 3 hopefuls.

    1. Christian Bale for The Fighter. (won, hooray!)
    2. James Franco for 127 hours. (will probably lose to average Colin Firth.. bleh)
    3. Anything Inception.

Amy Adams was robbed, but I expected it. Melissa Leo is good and was great in The Fighter, but I'm not so sure most of it was an act... she seems to have a good bit of that character off camera.

The Social Network and The Kings Speech are the overrated movies of the year. Nothing more average, yet they'll probably dominate.

The Social Network is a movie that I had no interest in seeing and looked pretty damn boring but kept me rapt and engaged the entire time.... I think that says a lot for a screenplay with no CGI or mindbending. The people have been complaining for years that Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and can't tell a good story, so I'm not gonna complain when they actually deliver what we asked for.

That said, the Oscars to you are as silly as the Grammys are to me.

I just couldn't bring myself to watching them. The last time I actually sat down and watched the entire show was about 5 years ago.

I turned it on at a bad time, I suppose. Some grey-haired, ponytail guy stood up and gave a quick, very awkward speech. That was about all I could take.

haha the ponytail guy was head of FX for The Wolfman, I believe... so yeah, bad timing.

The Kings Speech wins. Of course... the snoozer.

Colin Firth beats Franco and company and it's bad when the clips they show of him aren't even convincing. Yay, you did great playing the dry British guy you are...in real life.

Same with Natalie Portman. C'mon... she's not acting. She's reading. Why am I the only one that can tell the difference? When you're still in character accepting your award... you weren't acting unless the film was based on you.

    Theater-nerd rant end.

The Kings Speech was a joke. I'm sorry, how in God's name was that film groundbreaking, memorable, or relevant? The academy sucks.

Any Brit based period film they love. No matter how boring...

    Remember The English Patient?

Oddly enough, my Asian fiancee LOVES that British period crap.... she wishes she were British. Her favorite movies are Victorian English pieces and martial arts films. Her ideal film would be Pride And The Dragon or Fists Of Green Gables.... perhaps, The English Patient's Fury?

    lmao.

I'm a sucker for Brit pieces myself, but more of a case-study I think. Accents is tough.

I think that there are too many themes to ignore in films like "The Social Network" or "127 Hours"...those are the films that will last the test of time...

The King's Speech will always be remembered as the film that shouldn't have won Best Picture (Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient, etc). Best director? How does that NOT go to Fincher? I'm literally angry right now.

Guy is royalty, he has a stutter, he has to give a speech, he meets a speech therapist, they form an "unlikely" bond, he conquers his impediment, the end. Who cares?

I'm just relieved they didn't decide to call it "Facebook: The Movie".

And I hate to say it, but gotta give credit to Justin Timberlake, he really did steal the show.
