FYI Charlie Frye got a 38 on his wonderlic.

What does it say about Locker and Ponder and their ceiling potential when both QBs regressed and had worse seasons in 2010 then in 2009?

    2nd string?

    Ponder

I would definetly draft either Ponder or Locker but not with #8 in the first round. Ponder should still be on the board when we select in the second round. With our first rounder we should draft d line or CB.

Just because an analyst says a QB moves into the first round it does not mean they will be taken. Not all teams have a need for QB. I would say no more than two will be selected in the first round. I can almost guarantee that Ponder will be available in Rd. 2

Gabbert, Locker and Newton will go in rd one for sure.
Since Mallett had the best workout at the combine he has a good chance of going there also.

Sorry but Ponder makes me think of a boatload of QBs who ride the pine. Frye, Lienarts, Clemens. Note all had 35 or higher wonderlic scores.

Locker looks like a Kyle boller, Patrick Ramsey type but Locker has more mobility which makes him more attractive.

I would be willing to take a chance on Mallett and locker in rd 2. Only Gabbert and Newton should be considered at 8.

I am not hearing about Locker breaking ribs last year which clearly would have affected his accuracy. Can anyone shed any light on the broken rib story? Maybe I mis-read something and he broke down and ate ribs instead...

    QB Draft

Can somebody please explain why so much emphasis is placed on a QB's athletic ability. The last time I checked the best two QBs in the league (Manning and Brady) are not really athletically gifted. What good is a QB that can run really fast but struggles completing passes. Also, Mike Vick is a dual threat at QB because he is an elusive runner. He can make people miss. In my opinion straight line speed does not translate into the QB position at all. As a head coach I could care less if my QB runs a 4.4 or 4.6 40 time. Elusiveness is the key here and pocket presence helps as well with extending plays. Let's face it, we want a QB who can pass the football and escape pressure when needed. We do not need a really really athletic guy who is fast as hell and can pass a little bit. I'm sorry, but Cam Newton does not translate into a franchise QB.

Newton had a passing rating of 185 and not one skill position player on Auburn was 1st or 2nd team all sec. Gabbert played in a spread and his numbers were not as impressive despite having an all big 12 TE and a 2nd team all big 12 WR..

We had a poster say that Ponder is the most accurate in this draft but Newton completed 5% more of his pass attempts than Ponder.

You are aware that Newton had a higher passing rating than any of the QBs we are discussing right?

How does throwing 20 passes on one day account for yardage production? Newton produced almost 11 years per pass. Pop gun Ponder couldn't crack 7 ypa.

Its not about being a dual threat QB like Vick. It's about being able to extend a play and make something happen. Like Big Ben, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Freeman, Tony Romo.. just to name a few. You want a QB that can throw for 3000 yards a season, but it's also nice to have an extra 300 rushing yards to that. It's not the #1 emphasis, but it's a great add-on.

Does any of this really matter? I would say no. Vince Young was the #1 rated passer in the nation when he was in college. That tends to happen when you play for a top team and your offense is ridiculously simplified for you. Newton never has to make a tough read or a tough throw. Of course he's going to have good passing stats. It won't translate to the pros.

In support of this, Aaron Rodgers ran a 4.77 at his combine in 2005. I don't think anyone would call him a running threat but he did rush for 356 yards last season which put him third in the NFL.
