So the truck is killing me with gas, so going to get a small economy car that gets 35+ MPG on the interstate to commute with. Looked at Civic, Focus and Elantra so far. Anyone have any suggestions and/or real world experience with small economy car? Looking to keep it cheap.

I had an 88 accord that I hated while I had it just because it was ugly. But actually, now that I don't have it, I miss the gas mileage it got and it was actually fun to drive.

Are you looking for something newer or does it matter?

You can get 00-05 civics really cheap. Same for cars like ford focus, kias, hyundais, etc. Something like a Spectra i would imagine would come cheap and get great gas mileage.

I've got an 03 m3 and it's killing me with the lousy 15mpg I get on my daily commutes.

If I could make myself sell it, I would. But I know I'll never run in to the deal again.

Dodge Neon would be another choice for cheap + good gas Mileage. My wife's corolla does very well and it's an 03. VW Bug, Jetta, Golf... all get great mpg. Toyota Prius/Yaris...

Do NOT buy a Dodge Neon, you will be kicking yourself soon after you leave the lot.

My wife had one a while back before her Corolla and it was an alright car, I guess. No problems.

Though we've been relatively lucky on all cars so far. Change the oil.. add gas... good to go.

I'm looking new because of the warranty and I'm going to keep it awhile. A 2006 Civic is still getting $15K at Carmax and for $20K I can get a new one. I'm not a Corolla fan. Just don't like the look. I'm leaning towards a Elantra. Decent room, great features and warranty, for around $18K. The whole Hyundai thing kind of makes me nervous, but Consumer Reports has it as it's #1 car in the segment over Honda and Toyota and hell, it has a 5 Yr. Bumper to Bumper...and gets 40 mpg on the highway. Looks really nice now, but not sure how it's styling will hold up. Stopped and looked at a Forte and it isn't bad and it is even cheaper since has a $1000 cash back, but don't know alot about them. Haven't looked at a Chevy Cruze yet.

I'm a Ford guy so I say at least test drive the Focus, other than that avoid the GM and Euro products. GM for many reasons but mainly because they have a car czar driving for them and avoid the Euros because I doubt they are remotely price competitive with the Ford or Asian vehicles.

Chrysler/Fiat keep saying they are going to sell the small Fiats in USA, but they never do. Ford has 50+ mpg diesels in Europe, but they do not sell them in the US for some reason that I am sure is insane.

I test drove a Focus and wasn't that impressed. Decent room for the driver, but the passenger seat there wasn't. Nice car, well built, but doesn't "fit"...I'm a pretty decent sized human...

I think it has something to do with the EPA over here. Europe does what ever they want, here in America, we have dumb agencies ensuring the well being of the environment. As if China isn't destroying the world already with all their pollution.

If I were to buy a new car soon, I'd be looking at Acura's and Nissan's.
