Good grief. Just opened a jar of Mauna Loa macadamia nuts and they are SO rancid.. I'd say about half the macadamias out there are at some level of recognizable rancidity. Taco Bell sells the hell out of rancid shells and chips and there's usually some level of rancidity in the chips at every Mexican restaurant around Nashville.
Snickers peanuts used to be rancid I'd say about 85% of the time until incorporating the foil wrapper.
I think people don't recognize the aroma/taste. And those peroxide levels can be toxic..

What should I look out for to know when something's rancid? Also, what kinds of foods other than the nuts, taco shells you mentioned go rancid?

I can usually tell when bread or milk have gone bad but never really seen anything rancid, I don't think anyway.

I know it's rancid when my wife smells something she got out of the refridgerator , and says, "OMIGOD HELL, SMELL THIS..."

Most likely worst-case damage you will incur from rancid food is a good ol-fashioned round of the sharts or vomiting or that lovely "not so well" feeling..

All foods go rancid, though it's grain/nut based stuff that is most commonly missed by the average joe. "Staleness" is an early form of rancidity, then high-peroxide rancidity followed by outright slimey nastiness.. All forms are toxic to an extent.

The best way I can describe the flagrant rancidity you might encounter at say a mexican restaurant is that the chips have a bit of a "interior house paint" smell to them (it's probably rancid oil). Others describe it as being a bit chemical smelling. It can be faint or overwhelming. Eat Taco Bell twice and you will have eaten rancid food at least once.

Your body starts building up antibodys to kill off that rancid bacteria, and if it wins, you are healthier for it.

It's a cycle that never stops the entire time you're alive, eventually, the thing you're not immune to KILLS YA.

Don't go looking for germs, but being a germophobe won't extend your life, it'll actually shorten it...

Rancidity = free radicals, thought to be behind certain cancers and various diseases. More like poisons/toxins than germs/viruses..

???? Burned human body? The burning process would kill the bacteria. Raw human flesh might be rancid, but burnt human flesh would be more sanitary.
