He gave up an awful lot of catches. I remember him doing so having watched all the games. He does show promise though. he seems to have a nose for the football, and he's pretty skilled too. I hope he improves this season, and I believe he will.

I think he can and will be a solid starter, but he was consistently getting nickel and dimed as Finnegan was fighting Reggie Wayne/Andre Johnson, etc.

Finnegan has already shown top 5 CB potential and he is young. If the team lets him go, they aren't going to easily replace him.

...and I guarandamntee that Finnegan/Verner/McCourty is better than Verner/McCourty.

As an outsider I have never liked him and his style of play. But I gotta give the man credit for owning up to the mess and taking responsibility.

Verner may not be quite as good as a lot of fans make him out to be (myself included). But you have to be pretty impressed with his first season. The guy was a 4th round rookie for god's sake.

He seems to have great instincts (and a great attitude *ahem*). With a little added experience and savvy there's no reason to think he can't develop into a pretty legit corner. All things considered, I think I take him over Finny right now.

I agree. Verner has great potential but I have no reason to believe Finnegan is not our best corner right now though.

I don't think Verner has the deep speed to be a 16 game starter. I was surprised more offenses didn't test that last year.

He has a great feel for zone coverage and drops into passing lanes effectively, but I don't think he's someone who will be a stalwart on a defense.

I thought the same thing about him before the season but he seemed to show up when the rest of the defense showed up. There were times where the defense looked flat terrible as a unit but I believe that had more to do with off the field issue rather than all of the players all of a sudden sucking.

The defense took a hit after Schwartz left. If we have a solid DC and get a coverage safety over top of Verner and Finny we could have a very solid Defensive Backfield.

D looked worse after a motivated Fat Albert left, Schwartz leaving was not an issue.

He might just be one of those guys who doesn't have the measurables but just makes things "happen." Time will tell.

If he's someone who needs constant safety help over the top though we're going to need someone better than Finnegan on the other side or Finny needs to take things to the next level.

Gotta disagree about Schwartz. He built a good defense and we had good games without Haynesworth. It was a lot better with Haynesworth of course, but if nothing else, the fact that Schwartz leaving introduced Cecil to DC is a pretty big issue on it's own. How are our DB's supposed to succeed when they play ten to fifteen yards off the line?

About Finnegan, I imagine there were things said about his game during negotiations, and definitely about his fines, fighting, and field conduct. I imagine it was something along those lines that he took personally. That coupled with everything he's done for the team, organizing workouts and such to keep our guys ahead during the lockout.

You all can bail on Finnegan if you want. This entire defense has been crap since Cecil took the reins. We should all be happy that we finally have a real DC. Finnegan's best ball is ahead of him.
