CJ's impact on the passing game

    Here's another way to look at CJ's production so far.

    Regardless of his running woes, defenses are still stacking it in to stop him. We're seeing defensive lines focusing on gap control instead of pushing upfield to get to Hasselbeck. The safety is often coming up into the box on the snap.

    The result has been two of the most productive passing games by a Titans QB since I can remember. The OL has looked great so far in pass protection. The short passing game has been effective. Hasselbeck has been getting the ball to CJ in space which has had mixed results so far but should improve as he gets more work. How many of us have called for CJ to get the ball with enough room that he can utilize his speed in the open field?

    Yes, the running game must improve. I don't see the Titans going far unless it does. But even with a rusty CJ who is now having to learn to be a better receiver, he has a 7 yards per reception average so far. If that were his rushing average, we'd be ecstatic. As he learns to catch the ball in stride, look for that to improve along with him getting more looks split out wide.

    We heard this offseason that Palmer would be installing more of a West Coast-style offense. It looks like it's working out as designed so far. I think one of the reasons we're not hearing panic from BSP on the run game is because they know teams will have to focus less on the run game and respect the pass. When that happens, I think we'll see CJ getting more gaps.

    The Titans are taking what the defense is giving them.

    agreed, although Denver did not totally sell out the way the tarpkitties and the ratbirds did.

    It must be seeing as how poorly CJ and running unit as a whole are doing, we are still 2-1. Its really nice seeing our offense adapt and change to the circumstances instead of grinding it out.

    I really wouldnt mind seeing CJ being more of a short yardage receiving threat, since he also has the "ability" to make something out of nothing. We've already seen a 2000yd season from this cat, why not do something different and throw the defenses off. I do like how Beck is spreading the ball around but we also need CJ to be a major threat again to these opposing Defenses, since Britt is out of the picture.

    Everything could change this weekend. The defense doesn't have to worry about Britt now. Washington is stepping up but the other WR's not so much. Some of them look lost out there. The TE's are getting more passes to them and that will increase each game.

    I think the defense will stack the box until our young WR's can step it up.

    Very true.. but at the same time Hasselbeck is spreading the ball around. If everyone is now concentrated on NW, than Hasselbeck is smart enough to look for someone else. He doesnt like to play favorites as we can see with his 11 different targets having receptions and also with Craig stevens and Daniel Graham having two very important receptions last week. (Yes he favored Britt while he was healthy, but who WOULDN'T throw to that freak.) lol

    I'm very confident of the coaching staff and Hasselbeck coming up with an effective gameplan from here on out. :cool:

    It's kinda funny, defenses get happy because they held CJ under 100 yards. However, Hasselback just went 300+ on them.

    Having a QB who can actually read a defense and not totally cowher under the slightest pressure has been huge.

    The pass protection has been great so far. I think CJ's presence helps because teams are less likely to blitz because when they do it can leave CJ open.

    Even without Britt we have the makings of a solid offense.

    A good OL and smart QB can make your WRs look a whole lot better than they actually are and I think that is what we will see.

    Teams are playing more zone defense as well because it allows the CBs to be in position more to help out against the run. This is another way CJ affects the game.

    In Hasselbeck I trust.

    With C.J. not running anywhere, and Britt out, I think we'll begin to see more 2 TE sets.

    The last 2 weeks teams haven't really stacked the box.

    Teams aren't scared of Chris Johnson anymore.

    Wish that was true, but teams number one priority is still to contain Chris Johnson. Once people start sleeping on him, he'll make them sorry.
