It has become the biggest myth on this board that the reason that Matt Hassleback is throwing for 300 yards a game is because defenses are stacking the box to stop Chris Johnson. I'm not saying it doesn't have an impact but I am going to give more credit or is revile to the fact he is (for the first time since '07) playing behind an offensive line that isn't getting him killed. For the first time in 5 years Hassleback has time to drop back and scan the field and I believe that this is the result of it. We are seeing the best passing game in Tennessee history because we now have a legitimate QB and an offensive line giving him a ton of time in the pocket. It doesn't matter who is in the backfield if you have those to things you are going to light people up through the air. Also lets remember that we have gone up against a Ravens secondary riddled with injuries and the Broncos.

Secondly, anyone who thinks that Johnson is an effective receiver right now isn't watching the games. Over the last three games Johnson's stat line at receiver has been as follows:

    (Catches/Yards/AVG/TD/Long/Targets)

    6 25 4.2 0 11 7
    3 12 4.0 0 6 5
    4 54 13.5 0 34 7

Johnson has caught 68% of the passes that have gone his way. On average we gain 4.7 yards every time we throw Johnson the football. Take out the outlier and those numbers go down to 4.75 YPC and 3.1 YPT (yards per target).

Johnson isn't running and his statistical effect in the passing game is minimal. There is no bright side to Johnson's performance through the first three weeks of this season and the fact that we are trying this hard to find one tells me that we could have found a way better use for the 30 million dollars that we gave him.

NFL teams aren't as stupid as NFL fans.

NFL teams/personnel know that Chris Johnson hasn't been the best player on this team for almost half a year.

If those stats are right he has caught 68% not 54%. plus two of those drops werent the best throws. I agree tho he needs to step up in the passing game.

Watching CJ try to catch has always been painful though.

Amazing that you can be that athletic but so bad at catching.

Yep, he definitely wasn't given a pair of Fitzgerald hands. Haha

Updated the numbers. Had something messed up on the spreadsheet I was using. The 19 targets vs. the 24 targets his number go up to pedestrian as opposed to horrible.

I don't even know what you are trying to say. So you're saying C.J. has gotten so bad that it takes 8 men to defend him?

Yes, they have. Re-watch or read a link to an SI article I posted yesterday. The example used in that article shows the safety creeping into the box at the snap. I'm not saying it was done every snap but it was on many early downs.

Our WRs were seeing single coverage except Britt who was getting the FS to cheat his direction. It's why we saw Britt moved around a lot Sunday.

To an extent, I agree. I'm not saying Hasselbeck's success is all because of CJ. But it is a factor as is Hasselbeck's accuracy, OL protection and improved receiver play. I think Young and Collins had the same opportunities last season but were unable to take advantage enough.

I do think CJ will continue to get better in the passing game as he has each week so far.

It was noted that in the Baltimore game, they stopped stacking the box.

Why would they stack the box anyway? Unless they are just that dumb. Hmm... 300 yards passing or this rushing attack that'll get 3 yards per carry at best?... I'll take the 300 yards, please.
