Well maybe you've never played football I don't know but trust me speed is the most important individual attribute possible, in many ways it's the great equalizer.

You're right game film is extremely important, the thing is Spence is very undersized already, and running 4.71 at his size is not impressive at all and will make a difference in the NFL. It's one thing if we're talking about a guy, 6'3" 245 running 4.71, but Spence is 5'11" about 225. I do like him on tape, I do, I'm just saying his slow forty and small size is a factor.

The best draft we could POSSIBLY end up with:

    1st: G David Decastro
    2nd: DE Vinny Curry
    3rd: DT Derek Wolfe
    4th: C Philip Blake
    5th: DE Jake Bequette
    6th: LB Vontaze Burfict
    7th: FB Bradie Ewing

I've played ball in high school and the college level so yeah I know what matters. I'd rather be better on game film than the 40 yard dash. Football isn't a track meet, it's a physical game. 40 times mean nothing if the guy can't get it done on the field. Yeah, some are impressive, but again they don't mean a lot. I understand what you're saying about size/speed combination. Your example was a 6'3" 245 guy versus a 5'11'' 225 guy with the same speed. I see where you're coming from and the bigger guy SHOULD be the fit, but again if the 6'3" 245 gets outplayed by the 5'11" 225 guy, I know who I'm taking. Speed is a huge asset, but definitely not the most important.

^^I think in the NFL you have to find players with a combination of the two. They have to show that they have football instincts on the field, but they have to be big enough and fast enough, as well. There have been many players that thrived in college and just couldn't cut it with the superior athletes the NFL has to offer. On the other hand, there have been workout warriors that got drafted off pure athleticism and potential that turned out to be horrible NFL players. 40 times and bench press are great factors that shouldn't be overlooked though; not only because it does prove a players athletic ability, but it also shows that they are willing to work hard to excel.

And what is wrong with Brandon Thompson in the first round exactly?

Oh yeah I forgot half the members on this board assumes that since we have a second round pick that a guy like Brandon Thompson is going to be their at the 20th spot in the 2nd round.

If your quick..that can cover up for ones lack of outright speed. Especially for a LB. imo. Like i said before...his weak bench scares me more than his 40 time

I dont think thats it..I just think most people are opposed to drafted what many would believe to be a 2nd round guy in the first. Regardless of whether or not he's there for our pick in the 2nd.

All about one's draft philosophy...hypothetically speaking for if I have a guy rated on my board as a top 2nd round guy even if he addresses a need I wouldn't take him with my 1st round pick because I would prefer to get a guy of much higher value with that pick even if that means I may miss out on him by the time I pick in the 2nd round

Me too, played from the time I was eight years old through the Junior College level. I did get recruited by some very small schools at the time, but I felt like going to school close to home and was kinda pressured to play JC ball. Enough of that, you are right football is not a track meet and if you don't have that "tough mentality" you won't be a good player. Meaning you either know how to hit or you don't. At lower levels such as High School speed really is the biggest factor, simply because you can't teach speed. You can get better in your technique, you can lift weights and get stronger but you can only increase your speed in very small increments. As far as Spence goes, I wonder if he'll get lost somehow in scheme (is he a strong safety, outside LB in a 4-3)? I think he's too small to play in a 3-4 as an OLB but he'd fit pretty well in a 4-3 outside. I think his forty will really drop him in the draft which could be good for us, maybe he'll be on the board in the 4th or 5th and I'd be more than fine if we took him there.

I agree, one big reason I like Spence is because I think he can have the opportunity to play for us at a cheaper price. Like you said 4th or 5th round.
