Both candidates for the starting quarterback job looked good on Saturday at LP Field, as the Titans ran through simulated game conditions. Neither Matt Hasselbeck nor Jake Locker threw deep down the field very often, but both were accurate in short and middle distances.

Locker was 20-of-23 passing, while Hasselbeck went 10-for-15 with one interception.

Locker showed his arm strength on a few occasions, once hitting tight end Craig Stevens on a seam route up the right side of the field and once firing a hard pass into the left corner of the end zone that Marc Mariani caught for a touchdown. One of Locker’s incompletions was an intentional throw-away out of bounds.

Hasselbeck began the afternoon by completing a short pass to rookie Kendall Wright, who was participating in his first full practice of training camp. Hasselbeck was intercepted when he threw long for wide receiver James Kirkendoll and rookie cornerback Coty Sensabaugh was there to catch the ball.

“It’s more fun to see them in this atmosphere when they’re out there competing, running the show themselves, with no one looking over their shoulders and adjusting from play to play,” coach Mike Munchak said. “It’s more real, even though there were no fans. … Both of them moved the ball.

“I liked the way they’re handling the huddle. I liked the way they’re talking to their players. They’re doing a lot of good things you want your quarterback to do, so that’s exciting to watch for a head coach.”

Wait... who was specifically mentioned receiving from Locker?

Oh yeah, Stevens and Mariani. Pretty sure Stevens will be getting a record year in receptions for him and Mariani seems to be solidifying his roster spot.

A record year for Stevens is like 15 catches.

I like Stevens, but what bothers me is the contract we gave him. Tight ends generally don't get much money - even the good ones. But Stevens is under a 4 year/$16M deal with us. That's extremely high for someone who's not going to trouble a defense with route running or playmaking abilities.

He's always going to be a great blocking TE who can run simple routes and catch the ball if he's open.

So Locker had only two unintentional completions during an entire practice? Our QB is coming along nicely it seems.

He's making like $1 million this season in base salary. It's not like he broke the bank.

    2012: $1 million
    2013: 2.5 million
    2014: $3.4 million
    2015: $3.5 million

Anyone who thinks he sees those last two years at his current output is crazy.
