Titans running back Javon Ringer underwent two surgeries and spent four nights in the hospital as a result of a cellulitis elbow infection that was diagnosed last week. He’s still wearing an apparatus that suctions fluid from the infected area while also healing the scar tissue.

But Ringer realizes he’s lucky. It could have been far worse if doctors hadn’t acted when they did.

“At first, even though it was swollen … I knew it was serious, but I didn’t know the extent of it until after the first surgery,” Ringer said. “(Doctors) said they wanted to hurry up and get to it because if it got in my bloodstream, I probably could have lost my arm.

“I’m looking as it as a blessing … It could have kept getting worse and worse, and it could have got in my bloodstream and I could have lost an arm.”

Ringer practiced last Friday, but said about half his arm ballooned up by Saturday, which led him to check into the hospital. He’s worn three types of the suction machine since the start of the week. “It’s just to clean stuff out, get a lot of the mess out,” he said.

He hopes to return to at least some football activity next week. He’s been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

My father had this same exact infection and had to have the suction machine attached to him for 2 months.

I think we should cut the guy so we can sign someone, cause if his is anything like my dad's, he's going to be stuck to the pump for weeks and weeks, not good when you play football.

Wow. This might take a while. It's good the Titans have two other RBs on the roster.

This is common in boot camp, and it is generally noted as a disease for those who do not take care of themselves in terms of hygiene. It always struck me as odd when people get it, who are not exposed to really unhygienic settings.

But the people who I know who have gotten it, they were out of few days without having to get surgery, I could very well imagine that he will be out a few weeks. I am actually sort of upset that he is having to get surgery. As it is typically pretty painful and obvious something is wrong.

    It's not a major surgery though, it's like a 30 minute procedure.

What sucks is that pump thing. Without that the infection could spread, and so he'll be stuck carrying that thing around for weeks, maybe months depending how sever it is.

You'd be surprised at how medical advancement can impact recovery time in even a short timeframe. I know i get surprised.

It sucks for him, but I feel like its not much of a loss. Im excited to see harper and Reynaud get more opportunities, hopefully the O-Line will wake up and we can get the run game going.

My brother smokes weed with homeless people, and he had it first, so tease my brother who makes Vince Young look like a Rhode Scholar.
