I've decided we need Manti Te'o.

I'm assuming we will be drafting around 8-12 range. We'd be 7 right now if the season ended and don't have the hardest remaining schedule. 8-12 range is perfect for Te'o, who I have 5th on my big board. Kuechly was 9th and I believe Te'o is a better prospect (IMO). This means we move McCarthy to the outside, now I know you're thinking that McCarthy doesn't have the body to play OLB. Here's just a short sample of 43 OLBs:

    Nicholas (ATL) - 6'3 236
    Weatherspoon (ATL) - 6'2 244
    Anderson (CAR) - 6'2 235
    Davis (CAR) - 6'1 235
    Black (TB) - 6'2 240
    David (TB) - 6'1 233
    McIntosh (STL) - 6'2 242
    DunBar (STL) - 6'0 226
    Miller (DEN) - 6'3 237
    Woodyard (DEN) - 6'0 229
Colin is 6'1 238. The average of those 10 players: 235.7. Colin played 20 starts at strong-side linebacker, four at weak-side linebacker and 11 at middle linebacker at the U. So it's not like he hasn't played the position before. The #1 thing that is killing us on defense is runs up the middle. I know Colin is hurt and he's been struggling, he is a bit undersized at MLB and Casey/Martin/Marks aren't producing like I thought they would. Te'o is 6'2 255 and a physical force in the middle. Ayers can then play permantely at DE, which he has been doing on nickle situations, and is .5 away from leading the team in sacks (and has only been doing DE for what 2-3 games?). Ayers is 6'3 254, literally the size of Wimbley. We now can use a 3-DE rotation of Ayers, Wimbley, and Morgan. McCarthy - Te'o - Brown as our LB is an improvement, which hopefully improves our terrible tackling. Ayers can provide the pass-rush for us, and can also see some time at LB (just like Bruce Irvin does in SEA).

Keep in mind that Akeem Ayers in his current role of SAM backer is T-4th in the NFL for tackles and Top 15 for pass deflection by linebackers. He is one of the few players that is actually having success in our defense and I'm not sure that we would want to just put him at DE and kill his versatility. I'm also not sure that Brown has the skillset needed to be a strong side LB as he does get caught up in blocks on occasion.

If we take T'eo it's because we no longer believe the McCarthy is the answer at LB due to his inability to stay healthy.

I have been high on Jones, but is the DE class really weak this year or is the linebacker class just that good? Because we could really use a 13+ sack a year guy.

Is it that time to give up on McCarthy? His injury history scares me, but he could potentially be an impact player.

Look at the Panthers they had 3 good LBs all with big deals:
    Thomas Davis: 5yr/36.5mil
    James Anderson: 5yr/22mil
    Jon Beason: 5y/50mil

and they took Kuechly. Although the Panthers aren't a team that you want to follow.. ;) It's not uncommon.

Switch to 34, draft Jarvis Jones & Wimbley on the other OLB. Use Ayers like ARZ uses Daryl Washington. If a OLB needs a break, move Ayers to OLB and bring in ZB. Casey/Martin at DE. Find a NT.

Does that improve our defense any...? Yes, because Jerry Gray isn't the coach anymore :)

I do follow the Panthers actually. They are my older brothers team.

The Panthers also have about 50 million dollars guaranteed at HB/FB... maybe not the best franchise model to follow.

haha yeah, that was my point. Although McCarthy, Ayers, and Browns are due a COMBINED 1.94 mil next year, which is nothing. All still on rookie deals. McCarthy shows flashes of a good player, but i'm not sure if it's the ankle injury or he's just not that great. I feel like I got all hyped up (like I did for McRath) and thought he was going to a pro-bowler, and then never panned out.

McCarthy is a different situation IMO because he was the defensive leader at The U and was a first round talent and possibly the best LB in the draft. He is a legit playmaker who uses his instincts to be in the position to consistently make plays. If he was healthy I think he could have a career very similar to a young Zach Thomas and consistently be one of the best MLB's in the NFL.

My vote for the first round is Star lotulelei or Manti Te'o, but lets be real we need OL.
    RD1 Best OT/OG
    RD2 Best OT/OG
    RD3 DE
RD4 Best ILB/DT Someone that can stuff the middle, and STOP THE RUN.
