Preston wants to put Heidelberg on the map

Titans wide receiver Michael Preston is currently the pride of the Student Princes.

That’s the nickname of Heidelberg University, the Ohio-based Division III school where Preston played collegiately.

“There’s nothing wrong with (Student Princes),” Preston said. “but we still usually just say we’re from the ‘Berg.”

Preston made his NFL debut last Sunday against Indianapolis, catching a pass in the Titans’ loss. He’d been on the team’s practice squad for the past year-and-a-half, but was activated following Damian Williams’ hamstring injury.

“I was very excited to (play my first game) and to get a catch on top of that was a big plus,” Preston said. “I wasn’t really doubting if it was going to happen. It was more of when, so it was just a matter of me sticking to my guns, working hard, preparing and when the time came, I could say I felt kind of comfortable over there. All that hard work paid off and I can kind of build on it.”

Surprisingly enough, Preston is actually the second Heidelberg alum to play for the Titans/Oilers. The other, Bill Groman, set the franchise record for rookie receptions when he caught 72 in 1960.

“That’s kind of special,” Preston said. “I’ve heard from a lot of people (from Heidelberg). I’ve been getting a lot of support from back home – the community, the teachers, my peers, all those guys.

“I want to keep doing things right and excelling in my game to put Heidelberg on the map, so to say.”
