With that said, we should definitely go hard after some of the better free agents. Obviously we can't and won't get all these guys, but these are the guys I hope we go hard after.

OL: Levitre or Andre Smith(if we think Stewart can play guard. I think he would strive there)
RB: Chris Ivory, Peyton Hillis, Shonn Greene, Steven Jackson, I Redman, R Mendenhall, J Dwyer: pick one...we need a good power back and there are plenty out there
CB: We can get one if we're willing to tell Verner he's strictly nickel. I like DRC and Sean Smith.
LB: Urlacher :pant: , Rey Maualuga
DT: Sopoaga, Kemoeatu, Sammie Hill, Alan Branch: pick one...we need a big ole fatty in the middle and there are plenty out there
S: Ed Reed :pant: , Jarius Byrd, Laron Landry, William Moore

Like I said, some of these are very unrealistic, and, depending on how the draft goes, we may not need to upgrade some of these positions via free agency. It's fun to think about us having enough cap room to get a couple of them though.

    Solid run down.

Mendenhall or ivory for the heavy back, cromartie would be stupid nice but doubtful. Maualuga was solid before he went off the deep end. And Byrd,... I wish hard on that star.

I would really like to get Mendenhall and Byrd or Landry. I don't like Landry in coverage, but I think he could change the way our defense is used.

Andy Levitre needs to be our #1 target. People don't understand how good he is, thanks to playing in Buffalo. Solid chance he gets in as an alternative for the Pro-Bowl. He's a Top 10/15 guard in the NFL.

A free agent OL is a must. And preferably if we can land a top end safety also. Would really open up our draft.

Where do you get the $71m number from.?

I have a spreadsheet that has our 2013 under contract players total $106.9m against the cap at the moment.

Not sure how to post a link to a spreadsheet (or how to host one), but here are the cap values I have for our 48 under contract players: (note this includes pro-rata's signing bonuses and base salaries, as well as any roster bonuses).

BTW, the cap impact of releasing a veteran is not the full cap value as stated above. We will still have to eat their un-amortised signing bonus, although post-June releases can spread that impact over 2 seasons.

Here are the 2013 cap impacts of some potential releases:
    Hasselbeck - $5.5m saving
    Hutchinson - $3.75m saving
    Amano - $2.235m saving
    Babineaux - $1.6m saving
    Hawkins - $1.233m saving

Jairus Byrd is a must. Young and consistently productive. Improves the most important need, secondary.

I think it is highly likely that the Bills will use the Franchise Tag on Byrd.

They will certainly use it on either him or Levitre, and having just signed their RG (Urbik) to a contract extension last month, they may choose to spread the investment on the defensive side of the ball.
