Recently on an episode of Inside the NFL on Showtime, Cris Collinsworth and Phil Simms, the two most annoying commentators in all of football had Jets linebacker Bart Scott on their show.

Bart Scott is surprisingly fun to watch in a TV studio, and the guy knows a thing or two about football as well.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because Scott said something interesting about the Ravens & Patriots defenses. He was talking about "Goons & Goo Goblins". He said very clearly that Baltimore was going to beat up the Patriots, and he was right. Those guys in New England weren't ready to bang with the Ravens.

What is a Goon or Goo Goblin anyways? A Goon is the term most often used to describe a gangster type of figure, maybe even a hit man could be a goon. But in football a Goon is simply one of those guys you don't want to come across.

The Ravens have Ray Lewis (Goon), Haloti Ngata (Goon) and some Goo Goblins. Ed Reed is a Goo Goblin, he's like the sidekick in a sense to the big guy, the boss, Ray Lewis. Terrell Suggs could be either of the two, a Goon or a Goo Goblin. Sometimes he lays the wood and puts fear in another mans heart, other times he's running around as Lewis' henchman, doing all Ray's dirty work so Ray can reap the benefits, and rack up stats.

Half the reason the Ravens are so good this year is because of their defense. When you play them you're playing grown man football, they're built inside out and like to hurt you.

All great teams are built this way. The 49er's have their own team of Goons and Goo Goblins. The Goons are Justin Smith, NaVorro Bowman, Aldon Smith, and Patrick Willis. Their Goo Goblins are Dashon Goldson, and Donte Whitner. Their defense runs the show as do defenses like Baltimore's, Pittsburgh's, Chicago's, and others. The Bengals are even beginning to get their own set of Goons.

What about the Titans, who would be ours? Maybe Zach Brown can become one of these types... Ayers? McCarthy? If we're going to contend with anyone we first need something to hang our hat on, getting to this type of defense is the quickest way IMO.

We used to have that going on. Jevon Kearse, Kevin Carter, Randall Godfrey, Blaine Bishop. Thats when we were good. So lets work towards that. Titans have always been a vanilla offense that played controlled football. Since we're a recycled Oilers team from the 90's, lets see ourselves for what we are and be that. We're not gonna shoot it out with Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees, we're going to play smart football, and line up and fight you. Can't do that without our own set of Goons and Goo Goblins.

Yet another reason why letting Courtland Finnegan get away was a mistake.

And this is the main reason why I have been pimping the Honey Badger so much. Sure he is small. Same size Blaine Bishop was coming out of Ball State. Point is you can't teach that kind of nastyness. We need someone to bring it. Someone for others to feed off of. Bring back some of that swagger.

I'd say he was. he was a major instigator that is for sure. He is at least closer to it than anyone else here other than Al Afalava who is not very talented.

Matt Hasslebeck has more balls than anyone on our defense, did you see the way he stood up to that Dlineman that one time? ;)
