INDIANAPOLIS Titans running back Chris Johnson dodged a couple of speeding bullets on Sunday, and he knows it.

Johnson set the Combine record for the 40-yard dash in 2008, running 4.24 seconds.

Sunday he watched from afar as Texas receiver Marquise Goodwin posted an unofficial time of 4.25, before it was officially logged as 4.27.

West Virginia receiver Tavon Austin was initially clocked at 4.25, before it was adjusted to 4.34 officially.

Was Johnson worried his record was in jeopardy?

“Not really,” he said via text.

Then Auburn running back Onterio McCalebb was clocked with an unofficial time of 4.21, which got things buzzing for an hour. Eventually, the time was adjusted to 4.34.

“Cant lie that one scared me,” Johnson tweeted. “That 4.21 was trickery.”

His record stands, but the defensive backs have yet to hit the track here.

“Them boys burning it up,” Johnson said via text. “I like that.”

Call me a homer but I'm glad CJ's record stands. In times like these it gives me a small amount of comfort to know that we drafted someone who is the best ever at something that doesn't involve the police.I'll never forget what it was like to see young CJ baffle people on the football field in ways I've never seen. Even if he declines horribly i'll always be grateful that I was able to see that.

C.J.'s 4.24 getting broken would have been the best thing for us. Too bad it didn't happen.

Those times arent official anyway, and in reality, he does not have the fastest 40 time at a combine. Bo Jackson ran a hand timed 4.12 at the combine. The NFL as a league didnt officially keep times until 1999, which is why it isn't really accurate. But even now team scouts use their timing before the official NFL times. So in reality, Bo ran the fastest 40 ever at an NFL combine. Darrell Green supposedly ran a 4.09, and Deion a 4.21. Rocket Ismail, Joey Galloway, Hershel, etc were all probably faster than CJ too, but again, there were no official times kept for them. But, the fastest player in NFL history is likely Willie Gault, who probably would have been the fastest person in the world if he solely concentrated at track. He supposedly ran a 4.27 at the age of 48.

I thought CJ's time was so remarkable because it was an official 4.24. If it weren't then the kid who ran 4.21 unofficially this year would have broken it. Bo's time is most likely no good since it's fully hand timed. The official 40's at the combine are more accurate because although the time is started by hand it stops electronically which isn't perfect but it's better a 100% hand time. So unless i'm missing something CJ>Bo when it comes to the 40.

Yeah, official because they didn't make it official until 1999. The electronic wasn't around when Bo, and Deion, and Green, etc etc were at the combine. Don't get me wrong, he is lightning fast, but he is not the fastest player in NFL history. Honestly, even last year, the fastest player in the league was Jeff Demps (before he got hurt). But Demps doesn't have a combine time because he was busy running for the US Olympic team so he skipped the combine. But in reality, Demps is faster than CJ. Demps supposedly ran like a 4.15 while at Florida. But also keep in mind. The 40 is an NFL thing. It is not a track and field thing, and the starts and timings are different then how they operate in real track and field. CJ is obviously extremely fast, but could he have been an Olympian like Jeff Demps? No. Demps would (or at least would have before his leg injury last year) beaten CJ convincingly in an actual track sprint.

Demps actually won an NCAA championship with a 6.56 in 60 meters. 60 meters is equal to about 65 yards. That is faster than Cj running a 4.24 in a 40 yard dash.

Right however the times don't exactly convert like that because Demps got to run up to 25 more yards than CJ. Unless you have a separately timed 40 yard split the estimate will be off. For example, Usain Bolt has the fastest time ever in the 100m but if you've watched him run, he doesn't normally even start pulling away from the field until about the 45-50 meter mark. If you took only his 100m time and tried to extract a 40 or 50m time from it you'd probably be wrong because the second half of his 100m is so much faster than his 1st that your estimate would be too fast.

Look I'm not saying CJ is the fastest man in the world. Guys like Demps and Trindon Holliday are elite guys with world class speed. However, in order to break a record you must run the race (or event in this case) in a sanctioned event. In football, the nfl combine is that event. Trindon is world class yet he failed to break CJ's record. Trindon's best 100m? 10.02, wanna know what Demps's is? 10.01. So we've got a difference of about 0.01 in the hundred and Trindon's fastest official 40 was 4.27. What makes you so positive sure Demps would run much faster? Look I'm sure that these guys could probably take CJ in a longer race but we're not talking about those races, we're talking about the 40. And in the 40 CJ has the record that is a fact.

Also I'd be careful about assuming that guys like Bo and Green were faster than CJ. Every good sprinter or track coach knows that even a good hand time is roughly .24 slower when converting to an FAT or automatic timing. Start adding .24 to those legendary 40's and you'd be surprised how average they look.
