So were the Titans close to landing Welker?

Everyone assumed receiver Wes Welker would return to the Patriots.

Then he went to the Broncos.

So were the Titans in the chase?

    Yes, and no.

Welker ended up signing a two-year, $12 million deal with the Broncos on Wednesday, but not before his agents inquired about potential interest from other teams.

One of those teams was the Titans.

It’s my understanding the Titans were interested (who wouldn’t be?), and relayed that to Welker’s representatives. A contract range was briefly discussed, and they were in the ballpark. It was a competitive offer.

But when it came time for Welker to make a decision, it’s not like he was weighing one offer from the Broncos, and one from the Titans. It sounds like he surveyed the landscape, and then opted to join Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

And who could blame him? He’ll have a great chance to win a Super Bowl ring next year.

As for the Titans, you can’t blame them for being open to the idea. And it’s another indication they wouldn’t mind shaking up their receiving corps if the right player comes along. Welker would’ve been a great weapon for quarterback Jake Locker.

The Titans, remember, were also interested in former Rams receiver Danny Amendola before he signed with the Patriots, and they’re scheduled to bring former Rams receiver Brandon Gibson in for a visit on Friday.

So what does it mean for the team’s other receivers on the roster? Well, it depends on how things play out.

Veteran receiver Nate Washington’s future with the team is in question, considering the team has been open to the idea of trading him. There’s a scenario where he’s back with the team in 2013, and one where he’s not.

Kenny Britt’s job in 2013 is safe for now, although another misstep and that could change.

I’m skeptical about Lavelle Hawkins being a Titan in 2013, considering he has a $1.9 million base salary for this fall, which is second among receivers. And Marc Mariani’s still on the comeback trail after breaking his leg last August.

I like former first round pick Kendall Wright, and think he’s going to be a good pro, and I like what Damian Williams brings to the team.

But the Titans have a lot of questions at the position.

And right now, they’re looking for answers.

I wont pretend like Welker's production isn't impressive, but I've watched him play a lot over the years, he's definitely slower now.

How effective can a slow short guy be?

    I personally don't care that he's not a Titan.

Espn reported that there was one other contract offer that Welker turned down due to the team not being competitive (us).

Kind of conflicts with that report as though we just threw in an offer along with everybody else.

I get nervous with guys like Welker. Could end up being another Alvin Harper:

Played great with the Cowboys when Aikman was throwing to him. Sucked after he left for a big contract.

I saw him drop a ton of balls and become almost non existent last year. I'm not sweating it. However, it is painfully obvious we are looking for a SLOT receiver. So let's get to thinking!

Who is our best slot receivers in this years draft?

I think he can be much more than a slot but Ryan Swope will be there for the taking. Prejudice will ensure that he's there well into the 3rd round despite him being at worst a second round talent.

I don't think that's the plan though. It would seem that KW is moving to the outside.
