When the Titans had their (3) 13-3 teams, their 12-4 team, 11-5 team and their 10-6 team, one thing that Williams and Schwartz did so well with the front seven was pressure. We averaged around 50 sacks per year combined from these teams. One of the things I noticed Fisher doing later in his tenure here was playing more nickel defense and only rushing four most often more than bringing blitz packages on first and second downs the way he use to years before.

Reason being, he had the front four talent to apply pressure on their own. During the Redskin game last Thursday, the defense on the second Redskin scoring drive of the game looked horrible and exactly how we finished off from last year. There were times that the linebackers and secondary looked lost and confused. After we scored on CJ's long run, our next defensive series against Rex Grossman, we apply some old school pressure and got great results. For the vast majority of the game, Munchak kept it simple on defense obviously not giving too much away and just getting the team soaked into to the pre season.

I think Fisher during his earlier years with fresh new young talent, like we have now, was really genius in building defensive confidence and bringing more blitz packages to help build great defensive momentum in the heart of those seasons, giving players more opportunity's to make plays. Williams should do exactly that, mentoring Grey as if it were 1999 all over again and with the speed of this era of Titan defense, would probably get huge results and prevent these young players from getting discouraged in games by being picked apart by seasoned quarterbacks they are going to face this year. Brady, Manning and Rodgers all thrive on timing in the pocket and maintaining a consistent rhythm picking apart defenses. Only and best way to prevent the best or any other under center on the opposing side is to disrupt that timing and rhythm, and the Tennessee Titans in years past were one of the best I doing this.

I have heard that from Grey when he was hired that he was bringing back that old school havoc on the defense, but haven't really seen it the way it use to look. I'm hoping Williams for what he has always been known for, starts doing what he has always been good at more this year than ever. I think this would drastically help change games defensively, even if we gave up a big play here or there. I do have confidence in our cornerbacks isolated on the outside one on one.

    The defense needs GAP CONTROL.

(that's how you say it in one sentence rather than 4 paragraphs.)

We still have Jerry Gray who thinks we can run a Tampa 2 defense, so unless Greg Williams has as big of a say we all hope he does, then we're doomed

Getting on the boards and reading about people freak out over what was a glorified scrimmage.

Half those guys are not even going to be on the team in a month.

And that's the point about applying pressure for a younger defense that hasn't been grounded as well in GAP CONTROL. Do you remember how well the Titans were defensively when the Oilers first came to Nashville and into the first four years??? Just watching old games of the defense is night and day from what the last past several years have been.

Dick Le Beau's 3-4 invention was specifically made for speed linebackers to reek fast havoc from all over and through every GAP along the offensive lines they faced, giving many famed linebackers throughout the years huge sack seasons. And Grey has installed several 3 man defensive fronts that could be used more as a way to utilize back Ayers and Brown's speed through offensive lines throughout the year. Morgan and Wimbley are skilled enough as defensive ends to drop in coverage and rush the passer, so it would make a lot of sense to raise the bar in blitzing schemes this year.

I heard a lot of good things about Gray when we first got him, but am extremely disappointed in what we actually got. Playing the CB 10 yds off the ball on 3rd and 4 really pisses me off. That also detracts from the pass rush. I was very pleased with D line play last year. Morgan and Wimbley were constantly in the backfield. It was the DB scheme that screwed us. The ball would be out in 2 sec to a wide open receiver and our DL had no chance to finish the play with a sack. That 13-3 season in 2008 we actually didn't blitz that much. Our corners played lock down coverage and our front 4 were good enough to get to the QB consistently.

What I'm pretty much saying is our pass rush is not the problem. Our DB scheme is the problem and fixing that could fix the whole defense.
