I don't feel like any of the options.

I think he has the mechanics, but not sure if he has the decision making, accuracy, and "it" factor that he'll need to be a leader on the offense. Right now he's more of a game manager.

That and more in game experience. Which I supposed goes hand in hand with the confidence.

Great comparison. It is truly hard to accept that some QBs still take time to develop with all of these rookie phenoms these days. I think they are all a product of the changing offensive schemes with their pistol formations.

Sample size is the most important factor. Even guys like RG3, Luck and Wilson can't be considered franchise QBs yet because we only have 16 games to run with right now. Locker only has 16 games under his belt also. Kaepernick has only a few games... although he does have clutch games under his belt. I still can't fully invest in guys like Kaepernick simply because they haven't played nearly enough to prove themselves as a "franchise" QB.

Vince Young looked pretty promising his first couple of years...

For me, it's not a "sides" issue... I just don't feel the sample we've gotten from him is enough to really make a guess either way. He's had, what, 11 starts? Maybe I'm wrong, but that's not even a season.

He was injured VERY early on last season. Difficult to play injured - ask ANY player.

His OC was Chris Palmer. I mean, come on... that's the worst thing you can do to a "first year" player.

His Oline was horrific - AND injured. Not even our star player did very well. Yes, I'm talking about CJ.

Our defense sure didn't help by putting the Offense's back against the wall. It's much better to play with a balanced, confidence in your team. Instead, he had to play to, pretty much, be the only "winning" component to this team.

Let's face it... our WRs weren't that great last year, either. It was a mixed bag, though. He wasn't that great and the WRs weren't that great. Put that together and you have a mediocre passing attack.

Now, all that might lead one to believe I'm a Locker fan. No. No I'm not. I'm just not as quick to jump all over him about last season. There were far, FAR too many variables last season to make an educated guess. Jake sure hasn't shown himself to be good - everyone can agree he's shown glimpses of greatness, but that's right up there with potential. Jared Cook had a lot of potential... bleh.

All-in-all... what I've been saying since the end of last season is that we rebuild the line and build a team that will do almost nothing but help the QB. Jake has zero excuses this year. The only thing that can hinder him now is an injury - but then he can be classified as possibly injury-prone.

If Jake succeeds this season... we're set.
If Jake fails... we get a new QB.

Here's the thing... what the team has done doesn't look like a team that has been built around Jake Locker. Everything they've done looks, to me, like they are built to have ANY QB put in there to succeed. Jake fails? Get a new QB and you already have a team built around the QB in order for him to succeed.

The way the team did it - to me - is they made the team strong in order to put a QB in to win. I've seen teams put a QB into a team that isn't great... then they build the team around him. Problem is, that only works if your QB is ELITE - see Peyton Manning on the Colts.

Instead, this team isn't built around a QB... it's built FOR a QB.

So, Locker has no excuses this year. We will know with a 90% confidence that he is good or bad.

Sorry for the rant. I'm tired and my daughter is waking up... so I may have rambled a bit...

Quarterbacks generally sat for a while back then. Kerry Collins was an exception because they were an expansion team. Not only that but McNair came from a small school. Also, Locker was a 4 year starter being compared to some pretty raw guys like Gabbert and Newton.

Drew Bledsoe, Rick Meir, Heath Shuler, Trent Dilfer, all first round picks that started their rookie year back then. And the team expected Locker to need time to develop when he was taken. that is why they signed Hass.

It is still a totally different era and situation.

I badly want Locker to be like Aaron Rodgers, but I have a hard time seeing that when he has basically looked the same for 6+ years now.

I guess Alex Smith turned his game around, but he was an efficient game manager in college and was far better than he was made out to be earlier in his career.

I agree it is different. And McNair was extremely raw coming out of Alcorn State where I believe they played the run-and-shoot. Or something similar. Playing QB is a lot easier now thanks to NFL rule changes. I remember when it was unheard of for a QB to be rookie of the year. Now it is almost unheard of for a QB not to be rookie of the year. Even Peyton Manning was pretty bad his first year.

I love the Titans, but I can't put to much into Jake. This is the same quarterback that had an 0-12 record at UW the 2008 season. We are going to be a run heavy team. If we can be in the top 5 in time of possession, we will have a winning record without having to depend on Jake throwing over 20 passes per game. He just needs to do enough to make the defense play our run game somewhat honest (6 or 7 in a box compared to 8 or 9 like in the past). Two (4 max)play action plays a quarter could keep defs guessing. Bottom line, I'm not asking Jake to win the game for us, I just don't want him to lose it for us.

Its well documented I'm 100% behind Jake Locker.

If you're using last weeks game vs the Skins as a marker for where you think Jake Locker is, don't.

We dialed it back a lot that first preseason game, coaches dont want to give away anything just yet, and with a guy like Locker, just getting thru to week-2 of the preseason healthy is a win. He's still got plenty of time to tweak things if youre concerned.
