Bengals didn't get lucky. They were well prepared. Compare Dalton's college stats vs. Locker's college stats. Easy to see which one was more likely to find NFL success.

Many of those guys were drafted to be backups, their franchise was not mortgaged to them, like our 2nd rd QB would be. and The Seahawks got extremely lucky.

OK... you can list a bunch of QBs that have worked in the 2nd or later..

But look at the percentages... It's generally a losing formula. It's percentage wise, more risky of a proposition than a 1st rd. pick. But a 1st rd pick is a pretty risky pick, too.

It Can work... but not with any regularity.

Excuses excuses. We wouldn't be mortgaged to em either... That's the beauty of drafting a QB post first round... :D

Our team is mortgaged to the long and hollow hopes of a healthy jake locker! I'm sure drafting a backup with higher hopes sure wouldn't hurt!

You take BPA. If every team ahead of us goes QB crazy, there will be a great deal of defensive talent on the board. It would be dumb to reach on a QB. It would be smart to try a half court prayer in the second however.

Yes.. they did get lucky. Matt Leinart had a bunch of success in College. COLLEGE SUCCESS IS NO INDICATOR OF NFL SUCCESS. Or else Leinart and Young would be world-beaters, Brady would not be a future Hall of Famer.

There is no way to accurately predict a QBs NFL chances.. or else there would be much fewer busts.

"COLLEGE SUCCESS IS NO INDICATOR OF NFL SUCCESS."

That might be the dumbest thing I've read on here in quite some time. Not all successful college qbs will be great NFL qbs, but most all great NFL qbs were successful college qbs.

"There is no way to accurately predict a QBs NFL chances."
No system is 100% accurate. But if you know what to look for, you can separate the QBs who will be good in the NFL from the ones who will be busts. When comparing Andy Dalton and Jake Locker's college careers, it was quite obvious who would be better. It wasn't difficult to predict that Blaine Gabbert would be a bust, either.

Want to compare Tom Brady and Leinart's college careers? Go for it. Tom Brady had the better games against good competition. Just see the 2000 Orange Bowl.
But nevermind... it's all big one crapshoot. Just put all the names in a hat and pick one. Because it's all luck if you pick a good QB. Right.

    Is it dumb?????

Of course you have to be somewhat successful to ever be considered for the NFL.. but it is still true that Being "clutch" or having great stats in the NCAA has little bearing on how good of an NFL QB you will be.

It is a crapshoot. Ask any franchise.. ever. Which "sure thing" NFL QB really turned out to be a sure thing??

There's always talk about being "NFL ready" when there is no way to tell. If there ever was a sure thing NFL QB, it would be Matt Leinart. He had it all. Tim Couch, David Carr, you name it.

Max, look at the odds of drafting an even decent QB high in the draft.. it is astronomically small. If it isn't a total crapshoot, then luck definitely plays a large factor. Sure, you can make an astronomically stupid choice like Jamarcus Russell.. but even the smartest NFL minds would have laughed at you if you had told them that Leinart was going to be a mega-bust.

Gabbert and Locker were project picks based on potential. Of course those have a high bust rate.. but most great NFL QBs never even got that near a national championship.

I'll repeat it again.. NCAA success is no indicator of NFL success.

There is no way to predict QB success with even 50 percent accuracy. So in what way is it not a crapshoot??

Scouting can help your odds.. but still, it's a crapshoot.

If Tom Brady was so obviously going to be an NFL star.. why did everyone pass over hin 5 or 6 times in the draft? gimme a break.

If you've got some secret formula, I suggest you contact the Titans right away. I would be your biggest fan.
