Also after reading this it sounds like Munchak played the management here, hell they were not only wanting to keep him around they were gonna give him a raise AND extend his contract. He wanted the PSU job all along and he forced the team to fire him and still have to pay him his last year's salary.

According to Mortensen, Munchak turned down a “hefty raise” and an extension in Tennessee; presumably, he would have gotten those only if he’d fired multiple members of his coaching staff.

While it appears that Munchak took a stand based on principle, it’s easier to do that when the fallback is a job that Munchak apparently considered leaving the Titans to take two years ago.

It's called loyalty and I respect him for that. It's easy to save your own ass by canning everyone, but munch obviously believed in logians to say fire me then. Plus he could see that starting over with a new staff, even the ones you mention, would only put him back in the same position next year.

It sickens me that we offered him an extension and a raise. That is just insane.

I don't buy that he played us at all. I hope he gets the Penn State job and I wish him luck.

News just broke that Golden has decided to stay at Miami. This on the day that Munch interviewed at Penn St. I don't think that's a coincidence. PSU wanted him last time they had a coaching vacancy and he stayed here as HC. I bet he nailed the interview and got the job.

I would be very happy for him if he did get the job. He may not have been the best fit for coach for us, but he was a really great guy and very loyal to the organization.

Mike Munchak is gone! No need to be starting new threads about him, so let the last 3 years of Munch die like we've unsuccessfully been trying to do with the VY threads. If you feel it REALLY needs to be on here then put it in another section of the forums.

I suspected this was the case when I heard he was offered the chance to return and turned it down. All this "he'd have a new OC" crap was irrelevant. If your options are get paid millions for at least one more year (possibility of more if you don't suck) and get paid nothing/be unemployed you don't turn the offer because of people who would be fired no matter what you choose. It has nothing to do with loyalty. It's not like he thought he could save these guys, he turned it down because he had other options.

It's the most logical explanation and while it bugs me it's the right call. He gets to leave a losing team in a city full of fans who hate him and go to his alma mater where people will look to him as a savior and even a decent record ensures his job security. Oh he also gets to be payed the salary owed to him. He'll really get the last laugh when he hires Dowell Loggains as his OC next season.
