I don't want to waste an 11th pick on a nose tackle type. We can rotate guys there and get the job done. Morgan and ayers would be our OLBs so yes we need that pass rushing specialist to rotate in at least. Somebody who is not a waste of time like Wimbley.

Bennett is a free agent isn't he? There's our guy.

I think now more than ever we are going after a DE/rushing LB

    What the hammer said ......

I watched the press conference and Whisenhunt said they would not be running a base 3-4 defense. In other words you're going to see the elements of both types of defenses. A lot of NFL teams run both 4-3 and 3-4.

Yes. Hybrid. We've had every coach talk about hybrid for awhile now.

Well, it's true more and more of defensive personel is sub packages, it was an eloquent way to dodge the question. What he said we would NOT be was more telling. Saying we would not be a 2 gap 3-4 defense....so it's settled right? Not exactly. Every defense has a base formation it builds off of and your personel is designed with that as a starting point. Almost all 3-4 teams will basically go to a 4 down look when they go nickel personel (and aren't trying to hide some exotic blitz). All 4-3 teams have a 3 down look out of nickel or dime when they want 8 in coverage. But the Steelers personel is 3-4 and the Seahawks are 4-3. How you use these in fronts and blitzes and such is where they cross each other.

At some point, we will either remain a base 4-3 or go to a base 3-4 defense with our packages (including 3-4 or 4-3 or both fronts) built from there. We will know a lot more depending on what we get in free agency and what we do with our current personel and in the draft. In you need a pass rusher (and I think we need one), there are many potentially available...but we aren't gonna get a pass rushing 3-4 OLB AND a 4-3 pass rushing DE. You could perhaps get the best of both worlds with a Greg Hardy type guy who at 290, can play 4-3 or 3-4 DE and get a good pass rush either way.

The real question is, what defensive coordinator has done both systems and is multiple in his packages? To me this screams Gregg Williams!!!

On the other hand, I think we will see them ask for permission for Butler (and be denied) and perhaps talk to Horton and Wade Phillips. Based on Whisenhunt's description, I'd go with Gregg Williams but if you're leaning towards a 3-4 base and want a guy who's been there done that over and over and over...Wade Phillips would be a solid choice if we can't talk to Butler.

I certainly hope Gregg Williams gets promoted to DC, but I believe the chances of that happening are slim and none. Ken is going to want to make his own mark on this defense, and hence will be hiring his own guys whom he trusts.

Yes, I was here during the 1999 season where Gregg had the #1 defense in the league, and he's certainly improved it since coming back, but there are other DC's that can do a great job too.

Regardless, the #1 thing this defense is missing is a dominant pass rusher. We can fix that by taking Khalil Mack at #11.

Right with you. Think the pick will almost certainly be a pass rusher of some sort.

I agree, a dominant outside pass rusher is needed. It will help Casey, that the QB can't just roll out of the inside pressure and it'll help coverage, when extra pressure is added.
