Now after being selected by the New England Patriots, QB Jimmy Garopolo finds himself stuck behind Tom Brady thru 2017 (all four years of his rookie contract).

If youre Jimmy Garopplo, what is best for you? Learn behind a guy who's not known to be a great teacher, or request a trade where you could be placed him in a city with a better chance to play....

If you think learning behind Brady is a blessing, ask Brady's current understudy Ryan Mallett. For three going on four years now Mallett has been thrown in the back of a closet and almost forgotten, and now his team drafts another high profile QB. When Mallett does eventually hit the market next spring he'll have thrown a mere 4 NFL passes in garbage minutes in his time as a Patriot. Good luck selling yourself as a franchise QB with 4 pass attempts on your resume.

What would you do if youre in Garoppolo's shoes?

    Make that money!!

money for nothin'. That's the life. Why risk the injury?
Mallet made money and did no work for it.

Jim Sorgi had the smartest NFL career.

    Honor for 2 reasons.

    1. Whose to say Brady plays 4 more years? For all anyone knows, this might be his last year.

    2. Isn't there a rumor going on Houston wants to trade for Mallet? So it seems like there is some interest in him. Albeit it's rather small.

When you have QB's like Bray, Rogers, Brees and such, you're right, the backups never see the field. You would think that teams like the Patriots would not draft a talent like Jimmy G knowing he will never be putting on his helmet throughout his entire rookie contract. If I was him I would definitely ask for a trade, or go Tonya Harding and have someone take out Brady's knees (satire).

Good points, but Jim Sorgi can't hang with a guy like Garoppolo. Its a little different.

He or Mallet will be traded before the last preseason game.

I suppose Garoppolo could put in a call to Bernard Pollard and hope for a Matt Cassel type of thing to happen. But we're not slated to play New England, unless, dare I say, we meet in the playoffs... :nudgewink:

Jimmy should learn behind Brady all he can for the next yr-2 yrs, then if he thinks he isn't going to start...request a trade....Rodgers did it, not saying he's Rodgers but Rodgers bided his time.

How competitive are you? Nicksmith says easy money to sit for 4 years. Some simply arent wired that way and have to compete toward something now. Who is Jimmy G?

He should stay. I will be very surprised if Mallett is still around by the start of the season, and Garrapolo is not ready to start yet. Brady is 36 (I think), so I agree that there is no guarantee that he stays 4 more years, much less continues playing to his current level for that complete time.

My guess is that Brady starts two more full seasons, with Garrapolo (assuming he evolves as I think he will) seeing increasing spot duty during that time. Year 3 would be a transition, and year 4 may see Brady wearing a cap.

All of that said, I do not think that he is going to miss additional quality field time by staying. In other places he may get on the field quicker, but he may wish that he didn't.
