Well of course selling tix makes more money than not. But many teams spend on the marketing campaigns to sell the tix. Those teams not filling the stadium STILL maintain the outrageous prices and "black-out" the games to the local viewing audience. So there is some strange impetus other than the simple additional (and probably fractional) revenue.

In simpler terms, why bother "blacking-out" games if TV viewing is the big revenue producer?

I saw that video of fans cheering Rice last night and I think it sends a terrible message; especially the women and kids wearing his jersey. I wish they could cut his ass but the dead money is prohibitive. Regardless, I'd like to see the TEAM take a stand and impose additional penalties to show that they do not tolerate violence against women. Or even go as far as to make him inactive for each game. They could donate the lost earnings to a women's abuse charity fund to show their seriousness. I wish the league would alternate between pink and purple in October because it's also the month for women's domestic violence awareness and that's constantly an issue in the NFL.

When it's our team, we will all root for the jersey color to some degree, but I will not cheer for Rice and I am disappointed that the team and the league is missing a big opportunity to make an example. Pathetic

God I hope not. The atmosphere inside football stadiums is incredible. When you walk thru the gates and into the stadium its special, you could never replicate that feeling on TV, have to be there.

It's a good question. I think the are 2 reasons: the TV product will be hurt if stadiums are emptier and quieter, so the league does everything it can to keep fans coming to the games. I think there is an element of denial at play here.

I am really just spitballing here and I don't expect to see any major changes in the next decade, but would things really be so bad if NFL stadiums were more like North Dakota State's Fargodome? The capacity is only 26,000, but it's crazy intimate and the atmosphere in there is absolutely incredible.

If NFL attendance figures continue to drop and more people prefer to stay at home and watch on TV, smaller stadiums will make sense.

A lot of people are passing on outdoor football in conventional NFL stadiums. That's kind of my point.
