The way I see it the worse a QB is the less coaching matters. Coaches can help make great QBs into HOF'ers and above average guys into really good players, but crappy QB's will kill a coach no matter how good he is. We all think Whiz is a pretty good coach right? How did he do in AZ with those scrubs after Warner retired? Exactly.

I don't really think you can really make a definitive statement either way. QBs matter. HCs matter. Some QBs matter more than others. Some HCs matter more than others. I'd rather have Bill Belichick and an average QB than Mike Munchak and an above-average QB.

True but if you give Munchak an even above average QB for all of last season we make the playoffs and everyone knows it. People sh*t on Munch and he deserves some of it but he's a prime case of a QB being the difference between getting praised as a guru and being fired.

Look at Coughlin in NY. Eli plays like sh*t his first few years and people are screaming for his head on a pike talking about how he lost the team. Less than a year later Eli turns it on and all of a sudden the guy on his way out is regarded as a genius.

Tom Coughlin went from having one foot out the door to now being regarded as a top 5 coach in the league ALL due to his QB starting to play well. I get that it's not all black an white but I think it's reasonably definitive. Coaching matters but talent (specially at QB) matters way more.

I see the point, and would add that I think Coughlin has now gone full circle based partly on the continuing trials and tribulations of Eli Manning. He has made it back to the hot seat it appears.

As I mentioned earlier, I think that coaching does have more impact than is being discussed. After my example of Don Shula, I also remembered Joe Gibbs, who won three Super Bowls with three different (good, not great at the time they played for him) QBs....Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien. People could argue that this was in a different era (and there may be some validity to this), but coaching was more important in those cases.

I think by the end of the year our D will be ranked between 10-15. First month and half we'll be around the late teens early twenties and show enough improvement to get to the 10-15 range later on.

Your point does have some validity so please don't think I'm dismissing it off-hand but I do believe that the differences are due to eras being different as you pointed out. The NFL has always been fairly QB driven but I think most would agree that it's reaching almost ridiculous levels. I think back then it was possible to "hide" your QB behind a stout running game and defense but these days it seems damn impossible.

Ummm- Munchak picked Locker. He was "his guy". Munchak sucked as a HC. No way around it.

And here we go. I know he picked Locker. But even a healthy Locker saves his job last season and you know it. We all had our reservations when Locker was picked but let's not pretend like any of us knew the dude would spend most of his career on IR or just plain on the sideline. The fact that Locker was playing well enough to save his job last season is enough for me to say that picking Locker wasn't what cost ULTIMATELY cost him his job.

It was Jake's inability to stay healthy that put the nail in his coffin. Munch also brought in the guy who was widely regarded as the best back-QB in the league just in case. Dude did his homework. Sometimes you do the best you can but life sh*ts all over you. It happens. He had the above average guy on the roster, he just couldn't stay on the field. That's not on Munch unless you want to find some way to put it all on him.

Munchak picked him. You want to say that IF Locker had stayed healthy he DEFINITELY would have saved Munchak's job. You also say Munchak should receive credit for the back-up QB he brought in. But yet you want to excuse Munchak from the responsibility of Locker's injury filled years. The pundits were concerned about his durability and accuracy-things that proved true. Munchak picked Locker over other guys.

Your logic is faulty. You can't say that Lockers performance is only tied to Munchak if it was good but not if it was injury filled or bad.

It's water under the bridge anyway because Munchak was fired. And your not thinking straight if your suggesting Munchak wasn't responsible for the teams poor production and his eventual failed run at HC. He chose assistants poorly and stuck with the bad ones even despite their respective units poor performance.

I don't think it can get any worse than the past few years. At least we're moving in the right direction with a real coaching staff. I don't expect us to be a dominate force right out of the gate but I definitely think that another year or two in this direction we will be a force again.

Unlike you though, I don't think we're going to be in the running for the number one pick at next years draft. I think we will be competitive, not dominate, not SB bound but much better than in recent years and that my friend is what I call progress in the right direction!
