I fear Charles is going to destroy us. Our pass D scares me also, but I expect us to get some pressure on Smith with their depleted OL. If we allow the dinky slot passes we've been allowing all pre-season, the exact passes Smith wants to make, well then, we're in big trouble.

Alex Smith isn't a running QB! The officials claimed that when they played us last year...

Here is how I break down this game ... Basically I am looking at this not as "Smith > Locker" or "Titans WR > Chiefs WR" ... but looking more at the matchups in the passing game and running game from both sides of the football for both teams.

    Passing: Edge - Titans

Taking into consideration multiple elements (WR vs Secondary, front 7 vs OL and QB play), I come out with the Titans on top.

Titans go into this season with the best group of WRs we have ever had IMO, and if Hunter can continue his play from preseason to regular season, we will have one of the top WR groups in the league (barring injuries of course). Combine that with a depleted secondary of the Chiefs, and I think the Titans' WRs are in for a big day.

On the flip side, the Titans' CBs are suspect, but the Chiefs are missing their top WR target. So I think Titans WRs out match the Chiefs Secondary more than the Chiefs WRs out match the Titans secondary.

When I look at the passing game from a front 7 perspective, I see a pretty even match up ... The Titans front 7 is suspect as well, but the Chiefs line is in chaos right now from what I hear. So I think that will be pretty even matchup, with the slight edge maybe going to the Titans (due to Casey).

On the flipside, the Chiefs front 7 is better than the Titans front 7, but our OL is better than their OL. I think the Titans should have a pretty solid group on the OL this year. While the Chiefs have a solid front 7 as well, I think the matchup will be pretty even with both sides able to make some plays in the trenches. ... So overall I think the matchups between OL/front 7 on both sides are pretty much a wash.

QB play is the final (and probably most important) factor in the passing game. We all know what Alex Smith is. He is a dink and dunk game manager type guy. He won't turn the ball over, and will keep his team in the game, but he isn't going to light anyone up. However, poor tackling could allow dink and dunks to eat us alive.

On the other hand, we are not really sure what we will get from Locker. He has looked great this preseason, and started of hot last year too (0 turnovers in 4 games) while showing he can score points if needed, before he got injured. From what we saw in preseason, and having a whole new offensive scheme for Jake, I think we can expect some more of that. I really look for Jake to push the ball down field and take advantage of the match ups this week (looking at you Hunter).

I think the Titans really have the potential to be explosive passing the ball in week 1.

    Running game: Edge - Chiefs

Running game is all about OL vs front 7 and the RB ... Its no secret that the Titans have been giving up big plays in the run game, and JC is one of the top backs in the NFL. So for that reason alone I give the edge to the Chiefs ... BUT don't be surprised if he is less than stellar given the fact that the Chiefs OL is in apparent shambles. I also think that Horton will have little fear in Alex smith and the WRs that the chiefs will be putting on the field, and may sell out to stop the run early. Those 2 factors may be enough to limit Charles.

I don't believe that the Titans running game will be a strong point this year. I think we have a backfield full of average 'work horse' backs, and no real game changer (DMC might be a game changer catching out of the backfield however). A good OL should help the run game for the Titans, but we are facing a pretty good front 7 week 1. I really don't expect to see the run game used for more than staying ahead of the chains, and keeping the D honest (which isn't always a bad thing).

Overall I have to give the edge to the Chiefs for run game.

    The pick: Titans 31- 17

While the Chiefs should fair better in the run game, I think the combination of a potentially lethal passing attack for the Titans and a depleted secondary of the Chiefs will put the Titans over the edge in week 1. The Titans D will struggle to make the switch to the 3-4, but a weak WR corp for the Chiefs and weak OL will hide the Titans struggles on D for this week.

If I am coming up with the Titans game plan this week, my focus is sell out to stop Jamal Charles early, while attacking the chiefs DBs through the air. Hopefully put up enough points to force the chiefs into a 1-dimensional passing game to catch up ... then unleash the blitzers to hide our struggles at CB.
