Yeah I'd much rather go 6-10 7-9 every year then constantly make the playoffs.

I get your point, but using extremes doesn't really prove much. However, how do you judge a QB's worth or value? Gabbert IMHO is not a starting QB in this league so yes, if you don't have a serviceable QB, you're toast. But serviceable is also dependent on how a coaching staff uses you to 'create' your stats. If you've read my posts, you know I am all about a coach putting his players in the best chance to succeed by emphasizing their strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. Cassell is a somewhat good example of this. He has two seasons in which he's played well and most of the rest are not starting caliber.

I mentioned the Giants beating the Bills with a backup QB...and yet they won. The Pats won with a backup QB (Brady) too and got to the playoffs again with a backup qb playing nearly the whole season (Cassell). Notice that great coaches can win with backup QB's...even the SB...but average to above average coaches can't? Brady is a good example of this. When he started playing, they didn't give him too much to do. Manage the game and pick your spots. This is how good/great coaches get a lot more out of avg or even below avg QB's. To make this point another way, look at Russell Wilson and Ben Roethlisberger.

Both QB's went to teams with strong defenses and strong run games so they didn't have to carry the offense. Big Ben had a very nice QB rating but when he was asked to handle a lot more on the big stage against the Seahawks, he had one of the worst QB performances EVER in a SB. And somehow, Pitt still won. While Wilson's stats are better and he's been more productive his first couple of years, he is not an Aaron Rodgers type QB yet. Neither was Big Ben at the time but with a good team around him and a coach playing to his strengths at the time, Big Ben did develop into a guy who could carry the offense.

So there are many examples of avg or worse starting QB's who have led their team to the playoffs or even won Super Bowls on the strength of good-great coaching. Joe Gibbs won several SB's with different QB's who weren't able to do much with other teams...and yet under his coaching and his offense, they were able to win Super Bowls!

I leave you with one last thought. It was said that the great Vince Lombardi was so good he could crush your team, switch teams, and crush you again.

I think we'd all agree that no one can win with an all crap team because their are minimum thresholds to overcome. But if you follow the SB, there are many examples of teams and coaching overcoming more talent and the last SB was an excellent example. The original point by another was that a great QB trumps great coaching and that great coaching wasn't really important. History teaches us otherwise!
