They should have never let him hit the market. Did you see what #25 did yesterday against a pass catching QB!?!?! Yeah, the market dictated much less than $9mil/yr for Verner, but it is very apparent that the was worth at least that to the Titans.

There is cap space sitting on the books right now, for what?

Verner was by far my favorite Titan and so obviously I would've loved to have kept him. That said, he WAS/IS overrated. He's about as good of a #2 corner as you could dream of having. But he's not a legit #1 as he's a liability due to his speed (or lack thereof). BUT, he's a very smart player and has great instincts and that's something that you just cannot teach. You want as many guys like that on your team as possible. There's elite athletes and there's football players. Verner is a football player.

Verner in all likelihood would've snatched that ball from Dalton and taken it to the house. That's just the kind of playmaker he is. He rarely seemed to let an opportunity for a big play pass him by.

But at the end of the day I can't really blame FO too much for letting him walk. Unfortunately for us he had a career season during his contract year so he was looking for the big payday. And I can't fault him for that. Like RSB said, when it became apparent he wasn't going to get bigtime #1 CB money, we tried to lock him up but he was scorned at that point and decided to move on. It's just a sucky situation but it is what it is.

Having Verner on this team doesn't put us at 3-0 right now, but there's no denying we'd be better off.

So tank year number 7 in a row in a never ending rebuild? Who's to say that this FO will do anything different in 2015 that it hasn't done in the previous 3 years?

Ironically - Bengals fans were screaming the same thing when they were in this position - wanting Marvin's scalp on a plate. You cannot say he did not build a team now..
Sometimes building is building. It doesn't happen overnight and I think The Titans are in a deeper hole.

I never said that Verner is the key to 3-0 or the Super Bowl. I was saying that a FO committed to winning in a small market doesn't let good talent go for nothing. In Verner's case, there is such a drop off between what they had in Verner and what they have now that it justfied overpaying. If talent like Revis came to Nashville, the FO would have had a better reason to let Verner go. But players like Revis don't go to small markets with cheap owners, because FA like to go to winners.

The best way for a small market team to compete is through scouting and the draft. The next best way is to pay for talent, in some instances, overpay. Overpaying is the cost of not scouting well. Either overpay, or lose every year, which will cost the team way more than overspending for talent.

Look at it from the GM's position. Take yourself back to March 11th. You have an all-pro DT in Casey who you MUST extend, you have a potential all-pro in Kendall Wright to prepare for, as well as a QB you may have to pay ~$10M/yr for in Jake if all things go as planned.

Webster didn't know Locker would suck in 2014 he had to leave the door open for the possibility he's back at a high dollar in 2015.

yep, almost always starts with drafting or otherwise acquiring a competent QB. After Palmer's good years and before Dalton, they were pretty poor.

But, you had to cap space to re-sign Casey, Wright, and Verner, and you didn't extend Locker. For a QB, if Locker wasn't worth an extension last spring, he can't be your franchise QB. There really wasn't a choice to be made here.

If Locker wasn't good enough for an extension, he wasn't good enough to be a franchise QB. I know Whiz might have wanted a shot with Locker, but there is 3 years worth of film on this guy. As the FO, I tell Whiz to study the film. If he can win with Locker based on film, I'll extend him, if he can't, I'll cut him then and go after a QB who Whiz can win with. If Whiz insists on Locker, that's Whiz's butt on the line this year. The Titans have sucked for at least 6 year in a row now. Time is of the essence, they are already losing a lot of the fan base.
