I wasn't meaning to imply that you were.

Overpaying would've been just fine in the short-term. But down the road is where it can come back to bite you. I think, regardless of what they might say publicly, behind closed doors this FO and staff knew this was going to be a tough transition year and we have a lot of work to do. Paying Verner CB1 money just to upgrade the CB2 position when we most likely weren't going to be able to go the distance this season anyway just doesn't make much sense.

I think the hope was that BWW and Sensabaugh would take their lumps this year and hopefully by the time 2015 rolls around one of them is good enough to actually earn that CB2 spot, rather than just getting it by default. But if we don't see some marked improvement down the stretch I fully expect we'll see a CB selected in either the 1st or 2nd round in next year's draft.

I agree we've been pretty abysmal with our drafting. But I don't think drastically overpaying necessarily solves anything. We're still a really bad team right now even with Verner.

We have GOT to scout and draft better, plain and simple. Teams that draft poorly don't win championships regardless of how much money they spend.

It is asinine to believe that billionaire owners would just invest money when they do not have to in order to make an enterprise profitable. The last time I checked, the most valuable and profitable team in the NFL was not the Seattle Seahawks, but the Dallas Cowboys, who have a .500 for the last 15 years. If you think the only way owners make money in the NFL is by winning, you are more naive than you think.

Hmmm...based on what I saw in the last Bucs game Verner was no huge loss. Not worth the money he got paid so far at least.

With a respectable D, this team isn't that far off. "All the way"?, probably not this year, but with the Colts starting out 0-2, and the Texans having Fitzpatrick (Alan from "the Hangover" movies) as a QB, the Division was (and still is) up for grabs. Locker has weapons at RB, WR, and TE and a serviceable O-Line. If the D can keep teams under 21 pts, we could be in every game. Without a playmker in the Secondary, this will be near impossible for the Titans D.

If this was the plan, and they saw Verner as no more than a #2 CB, then they were going to have to draft a CB anyway . No good team has sub-par CB's. If McCourty doesn't give you confidence that he is a #1 CB, and Verner wasn't as good as him, then it seems to me you are going to drafting a CB regardless. I think Verner is a better cover corner than McCourty, but McCourty tackles better.

I agree, and overpaying is not a longterm strategy, but it could have helped this year and beyond. Small market teams don't have the luxury of trying to bargain hunt for talent. You get what you pay for with small market teams. Must maximize every resource you have in order to compete.

The ownership group is the same, the team wasn't sold. It is still in the Adams family.

I don't know, I was one of the biggest ATV supporters here but he seemed to get burned quite a bit last Thursday. He's a great corner, I liked him more than McCourty, but if the coaches don't think he fits the scheme than it is what it is.

I also like BWW, but he had a bad game yesterday. The play that sticks out was the flag for PI in the endzone. He doesn't even look for the ball, breaks the pass up and taunts AJ. AJ just looks at him and motions a flag being thrown. BWW looked like an idiot IMO.

Tommie Smith has stated several times he is willing to spend as much money as possible on players, staff and overall in general just to make the game more enjoyable for the fans.

I liked Verner, wish we still had him but he walked.

Team has obviously been spending money bringing in players they feel can win with us, regardless of how trash they're playing right now.

Wow, I'm not going to explain to you how NFL teams make their revenue or why teams franchise value is what it is. You are just butthurt and want to act like ownership doesn't care about the team winning. Pretty sure they've spent plenty on free agents and re-signings and we are about middle of the league in salary spent. So none of the facts or logic back up your point of view, but think whatever dumb **** you want.

Never underestimate the ego of multi-millionaires and billionaires. I'm confident every single owner absolutely cares about winning. Whether they are wise enough to make the right moves in order for that to happen is a different matter entirely.

The NFL ownership group is the elitist of elite. I doubt any of them like being "the loser" or "the laughing stock". No, they want to show these other guys up and prove that they're the smartest/best/etc.

Besides, I don't think anyone gets into team ownership to sit back and count the dollars. These guys have more money than they know what to do with before they ever get their hands on a team. It's a status and pride thing. And some of them, like Jerry, just want to "play".

I don't really agree with the thinking that because he's performing bad in Tampa that he would've performed badly here.
