Pretty sure Manning just used the Titans as leverage. He was never coming no matter what. Wanted to work with Elway and not Bud.

Leverage? Denver was all in on Manning well before Bud jumped in.

I HIGHLY doubt he used us as youre saying.

It was definitely more than that.

The only thing I was skeptical about was forking over the $$$ he was going to command, considering his age and the fact that he was coming off of 4 neck surgeries and a year out of the game. As soon as the talks got serious though, I was 100% on board and wanted him bad.

It's possible but I tend to think not. It seems Elway wanted him so bad that Manning pretty much could've named his price.

Plus there were those reports of Manning being turned off by the "circus" here and that he was not impressed with Palmer.

I don't know how they define "developing a pass rusher"

But KVB, Haynesworth, and Babin have been considered good pass rushers under the Titans in the past decade. Odom was OK, and he got a bloated contract with the Bengals and promptly did nothing.

Manning is like fool's gold. He looks great on the outside, just like the real thing. But, when put to the fire, you find that he isn't what he appears to be. He has extraordinary regular season numbers. But come playoff time, he folds like a lawn chair. Don't get me wrong, he's better than anything the Titans wound up with, but I wouldn't say the Titans would have been in the super bowl had they gotten him. Too many other holes to fill.

I agree with the article. The Titans have a talent problem, in development, identification and acquisition. A fatal flaw in the franchise was not letting go of Fisher once they drafted Vince Young. Fisher had no clue of what to do with Young. Young had the talent, skills, and ability to be a good to great NFL QB for at least 10 years, in the right situation. Granted, he needed leadership and time to grow, but he had all the tools. IF there was a way to have kept McNair around for two more years after Young was drafted, and bring in a coach like Chip Kelly who could be more creative, the Titans could have gone about building around a franchise QB for the next 3 years and started seriously contending for a Super Bowl even through this year. But, we all know what happened and now we are in year 7 of a rebuild, with no end in sight.

All is not lost. There are assets on this team. What we can do with them without a QB remains to be seen. Also, the 3-4 experiment is not working, we do not have the corners or pass rushers to work well right now.

He was in ongoing contract negotiations and there was quite a bit of contention over how much guaranteed money to give him (at the time, we all thought it was possible he would take one hit and be done for good). He isn't an idiot (quite the opposite). It benefited him to make it look like he had options. The Titans (and Bud's insane talk of giving Manning ownership of the team) was the perfect leverage for him. Don't kid yourself. He was never, ever gonna go to another AFC South team.
