I think its funny you say manning ain't a winner when the season on the line but he has one more ring than marino who you say is ten times better.

Marino was in an ace ventura movie, +1 win. Manning only has papa John's commercials.

I agree with most of the things you post but you are simply wrong as can be with this. Here's the proof.

Peyton has thrown 8704 passes. Montana only threw 5,391. That's 3313 attempts difference. To put that number in perspective, Montana averaged 28 attempts per game for his 192 game career. At his current rate of attempts, he'd have had to play another 118 GAMES (or over 7 more YEARS at 16 games a year) to equal that number. That's a HUGE difference!!!

How big? Let me demonstrate. Montana finished with 273 TD passes which was dawrfed by Marino's historical best 420 which was the standard until Peyton broke that record. But watch what happens when you give Montana the same number of attempts as Peyton. His TD total jumps ahead of Marino's to 440 TD's...which would have been the NFL record. So not only would he have been the best QB of his time (or any), he would have also had the league's TD record. His yardage also jumps from a little over 40k to 65,472 which is more than everyone but Peyton I believe. Montana's TD% is 5.1 compared to Manning's 5.9% and both have a INT % of 2.6. Manning has an edge in yards per attempt at 7.7 to Montana's 7.5...but that's not a huge difference. to put these numbers in perspective, the great Marino...who had the most TD throws...only had a TD % of 5.0 and an INT rate of 3.0 and a 7.3 yards per attempt.

So it's pretty clear that Montana was a better QB than Marina and if he had had the same attempts as Marino, would have finished with more TD's, fewer INT's and more yards (and he already had more championships). it's also clear that given the same attempts as Manning, his numbers aren't that far off. Sure Manning would lead in TD's and slightly in yards, but remember the big thing is that not only does Montana have 4 rings and is undefeated in the SB (in large part to his play), but Manning has edged him out due to playing against rules designed to help the offense. Montana didn't have that luxury so in my eyes, Manning can't touch Montana...even if he does win another ring.

And yes, you can see how much those 3313 extra throws matter to compiling stats.

BTW, Tom Brady has some excellent stats too. His 5.5% TD's is second only to Peyton and his 2.0% INT's is better than Peyton, Marino and Montana. And if Brady had as many throws as Peyton does now, he'd be about 2nd in yards and have more TD's than Marino also (and more than Montana would have too).

Number of extra throws matters....a lot!!!

Keep in mind, when Peyton's WR's got mugged by NE's db's in that playoff game, he became a medicore QB. Marino was a perrennial All-pro and broke almost all of the passing records in the league under those conditions. Manning is ineffective given the same conditions.

Also, Manning won a ring beating a bad Chicago bears team and Manning (with his undeserved SB MVP) wasn't the reason they won...their D and their 2 rb's outplayed Manning. Who did Marino lose to in the SB?

Keep in mind I'm NOT a Marino fan, but I've watched all of these guys play and watched all the rules changes from the 70's to now. Football is very different now. Let the 7o's dynasty Steelers take on any Peyton Manning team and the Steelers of that era would destroy them given the old rules. Given the new rules and it might be a dogfight. That's a huge difference.

How players play in the regular season matters. How they play in the postseason and the SB matters. How they lead their team matters. What their win loss records in regular season and post-season and super bowl matters. If you wanna compare QB's of different era's, you have to look at the different conditions that existed rules wise. Given the above criteria, it's hard to see how Manning can be thought of as better than Montana.

Sure Peyton has a statistical advantage in the regular season...mostly based on 3313 more passing attempts, but Peyton - despite the much easier rules - has not played as well in the post-season and certainly not comparable in Super Bowl performances. Montana has 4 rings, 3 Super Bowl MVP's including throwing a game winning TD pass to win one with 36 seconds left. Montana also has thrown 11 TD's and ZERO INT's in his 4 Super Bowl appearances. Manning has not performed anywhere near that standard and given his opportunity to win one in Montana like fashion against the Saints...he threw the game LOSING INT.

    I'll take Montana...thanks:)
