This really has less to do with RW, and more to do with all the first round picks we missed before him. Not trying to stick up for RW, but we have been devoid of a consistent elite talent for a decade.

To make sure we are not re-writing history from knowing the outcome...

Locker and gabbert were reaches for sure. But the FACT that Watt was not taken in the first rnd and no one traded up to get him should dispel this 'sure thing' concept. No player is a sure thing first of all. Watt was viewed as a very good DE who was more of a tweener. He had the size to be a 3 technique and was very athletic for his size. But he didn't totally destroy his competition in college for a guy who IS destroying the NFL. And he wasn't even beating up on top notch competition in college. He was beating up on Hawaii and Northwestern...not Florida or the SEC teams. Heck, he wasn't even a first team All American his last year in college. There was some wonder he was a workout wonder as he should have much better production with his workout numbers than the stats he produced.

So as far as a sure thing, everyone expected him to go between picks 10 and 20 in the draft (he did) and thought he'd be a very good LDE.

Everyone got it wrong including the team that drafted him because if you knew he'd be this good, he'd have been the first pick in the draft or top 3 since Cam went 1 and Von Miller and Dareus went 2nd and 3rd.

But we've gotten a LOT of picks wrong!!! TOO MANY!!!

Only problem is, Webster had a big hand in player personell when MR was GM so RW's been involved in our personell going back quite a ways!

Man, that was a lot of keystrokes based off of something totally wrong. Watt was selected 11th, I believe.

He's throwing the organization a bone. An obvious fluff piece to diffuse criticism of Webster and "blame" the guy who was fired. Happens all the time in every business. "It's the guy's who got fired fault".

Watt was graded higher than Locker by all pundits IIRC. Maybe the term "sure thing" is a powder keg because yes- nothing is a "sure thing". But don't let semantics distract from my main point which is our picking Locker over Watt is exemplary of the problem we have with our draft history. We have missed on TOO many picks. And there has to be a definable reason for it. It isn't just bad luck.

Maybe we are on the right track with this "install the system" first. then get the players to fit it. Maybe we ARE in the first (and most) painful phase of a "total re-boot". That said, we'd be in for a 3-4 year re-build at the earliest.

But I'll ask everybody again. What in Webster's employment history suggests he can successfully re-build us from the ground up? I sure haven't seen anything impressive thus far that he's had his stamp on. And his stamp has been on our drafts and player acquisitions since 2009. If the lame article in yesterday's Tennessean is read critically, it only makes the case he is NOT qualified.

I completely disagree. The Titans need to aim higher than that. The way to be a consistent Super Bowl contender is to find a top-1o franchise quarterback. Settling for a guy who is "just OK" is the way you stay 8-8 for the next decade. Who wants that?

Unless Mettenberger looks amazing over the second half of the season (and I mean amazing), the Titans should draft a QB. And I expect they will.

And there is a surefire prospect in this draft?

Mariota lacks arm strength and hasn't operated under the center
    Winston has major red flags
Connor Cook is strongly considering staying for his last year

No. And I didn't say there is.

But, as I actually did say, I would still take a home run swing on a first-round QB unless Mettenberger looks like a total stud. The chance of hitting on a franchise QB in round 1 is much higher than in a later rough.

We already failed on our last 1st round QB's so lets continue the trend of missing on impact defensive players and take a chance on a 1st round developmental QB?
