2014 College Football Season Official Discussion Thread

I read this morning on the ESPN ticker that Miss. St. has beaten 3 top-ten teams this year while Alabama has beaten 0. Uh, they've both beaten aTm and LSU, but somehow Miss St. gets credit for beating them when they were more highly ranked and Bama doesn't. Just because we know now that aTm and LSU shouldn't have been ranked that highly doesn't mean Miss St. should receive more credit for the wins.

Not sure where I admitted I'm a conference fan. The Nebraska game comes to mind because all I remember hearing is how bad Georgia was going to whip them.

The unfortunate thing about the bowl tie-ins is that there isn't any Pac-12/SEC matchups. I'd say those have been the top 2 conferences in the BCS era.

 

I can agree with you on that. I think the BCS was an improvement over the previous bowl system and I think the playoff is an improvement over the BCS but it isn't ideal. In the current system, 04 Auburn wouldn't have been left out and would have had the chance to likely get drilled by USC.

8-team playoff with 5 conference winners and 3 at large is the best option we have with the current conference system without extending the season to too many games.

There are logical workarounds that allow a 16 team playoff without adding too many games.

Now teams could play 15 game seasons (12 regular, 1 conf championship, 2 playoff). A 16 team playoff increases to 17 games AT MOST for only 2 teams, 16 for 2 others. Not really that big of a deal.

 

I could see the playoff extending to 6 or 8 teams (personally Id stop at 6), but 16 is a lot. At some point you take away from the regular season. College football IMO has the best regular season of any sport, because every game means so much. When you start getting into 16 teams and what not teams that lose 3 games are still going to be in the thick of things, and I do think it starts to take away from the regular season. College basketball for instance, has a boring regular season. The tournament is great, but until it gets to March I personally think CBB is extremely boring. For instance, UK and Kansas play next week. If it were 2 football powers, that game could potentially be what keeps you out of a playoff. But in basketball, it doesn't matter because both teams are still going to be in the tournament.

 

lower divisions do it, but I doubt they have bloated regular season schedules.

looks like they tend to play a 9, 10 or 11 game schedule and then a 24 team regional playoffs with 2 byes. So a possbile 15 or at most 16 games. But the bracket I found had teams playing at most 14 games, but some could have played 15 if they progressed to the championship game.

this would be an awsome setup for division 1, or whatever they are calling it these days. But there would be to much $s left behind for the schedule to be shortned.

I think it's okay if Miss St wins. That should eliminate Bama from playoff contention and move OSU that much closer.

 

True. Either way, Bama or Miss St needs to lose big.

Miami can knock FSU out with a win.
