I'll start this out by saying that, right now, nobody knows how Mett will turn out. He's showing improvement but has done so against some pretty weak defenses. He's showing promise. The question, IMO, is not whether he'll be the long-term answer but if he plays well enough in these final games to take the pressure off drafting a QB high in '15 or bringing in a FA. Basically, he's auditioning for a shot at starting next season.

I have mixed feelings about Trent Dilfer but, in general, think he does a good job. He doesn't think Mett will be the starter in '15. I find his opinion aligns with my own as I thought Mett's ceiling was a possible backup in the NFL when the Titans drafted him.

    Dilfer's comments in a nutshell:
Too one-dimensional. Needs quicker eyes (make reads faster).

Manning is one-dimensional but is also excellent with his reads, accuracy, mechanics, etc. Same with Brady. Both have more pocket instincts.

Big & strong and can be better if he makes himself a student of the game. Hasn't shown he is that guy.

    Full interview:

Assuming Mett continues along this path of showing potential and does prove himself worthy of getting the starting job in '15. The key is going to be whether he becomes a student of the game so he can overcome being one-dimensional and gain those "quick eyes". I would think if Whiz feels he'll put in the study during the offseason, he's more likely to give him the opportunity.

How long as manning and Brady played. Mett has started 3 games. Let's see how he does before saying yes or no he is the guy.

I agree I think 3 games is to quick to judge but if he says this after the season then I think we could take his comments a little more seriously

Agreed. 3 games is not even close to a decent sample size. He's shown some weaknesses and some potential in his 3 games but that doesn't mean much at this point.

Dilfer was asked a "yes" or "no" question.

I agree the sample size is too small but I think it's fair for him to have an opinion based on what he knows of the position, in general.

I think that the message in this is that Dilfer sees the physical characteristics of a Manning or Brady in Mett, but has not seen the same dedication to improvement yet. I agree that it is too soon to say this with any level of certainty, but the "dedication" part is my concern as well.

Why does dilfer think he isn't dedicated?
From everything I seen even in off season activities he was first there last out, and at LSU he only took one class his last year and then spent the day with cameron learning to prepare like a NFL qb

Good question. It may be he didn't see "quick eyes" while he was at LSU but that could have been because LSU rarely played teams which challenged him and that he had some tremendous receivers who stayed open.

Hasn't shown that he's a student of the game? Based on what?

Dilfer has zero credibility in terms of critiquing QB. He lucked into winning a SB by having the best defence in the league and a great O-line and running game. All he had to do was not f'ck up and make the high percentage dink and dunk throws.

Difler talks about how much time he spent watching game film on opponents. Well you wasted your time with that Dilfer because you were shit throughout your whole career.

Ordinarily I think Dilfer talks a lot of sense as an analyst but who else is going to start in wk1 2015. Based on games seen so far Mettenberger is improving with each game despite playing against tough Defences.

Our last 2 games are finally against weaker Defences so logically Mettenberger should close out the season in a strong position. As log as he doesn't implode Whiz and Webster are going to go with him and draft Defence.

Yes let's see what he does against the teams we have already played, Texans, Colts, and Jags. The other thing the steelers, Texans, Ravens, are playing for playoffs. They not going easy on him. I am glad he playing now and not at very end of season. I really wished he would have played the second half of the Redskins game. I was impressed with how he played the steelers game. Especially on the big stage.
