Is the D really that big of an issue?

McCourty has been targeted with impunity. He has rarely made the O pay for throwing his way.

Casey cant do it alone. Williamson has been a nice surprise.

I wonder if there are other surprises on the bench? Will never know.

The defense is an issue, but the OL is a bigger issue. It's so frustrating to have an OL this bad with how much we've invested in it. But, we better not go OL in the first round or i'll snap. We are still the 31st ranked team in run D and 9th ranked in pass D.

There's two huge needs at D:
    - elite pass rusher at OLB (hopefully our 1st rd pick this year)
    - upgrade at NT (free agent or 2nd/3rd rounder?)

If we can upgrade those two spots and get further development from our young guys: Williamson, DaQuan Jones, BWW, Sensabaugh, Huff, Stafford, etc we should be set. Safety is going to be a concern real quick as well, Pollard/Wilson are old and Griffin is so up/down and is getting old(er) as well. I still would love another legit CB to pair with w/ McCourty.

However, if we can fix our OL and sustain a drive, that would be great too....

Elite pass rusher at OLB is so damn important for sure.. Beasley or Ray, but I kinda want Amari Cooper in the 1st.

It's scary to be relying on guys like Jones, Sensabaugh, Huff & Stafford to keep improving for us to get better.. Although it may happen, hoping on that (Ayers, Gooden, Mike Martin, Klug etc) is partially what has us in this mess in the first place.

If we wanna go defense heavy, Shane Ray at #4 and Lorenzo Mauldin at #36 works well for me. 2 new OLB starters, both great pass rushers.. Ray is all around great (tackler, vs the run too).. Mauldin is raw in the run game but he's explosive and does a nice job getting to the QB. He's a 3-4 OLB IMO.

This defense is bad to say the least. We could use every draft pick & FA on defense and still not address all the holes.

I think adding a pass rushing OLB should be the top priority in FA/Draft. That is of course if Mett works out at QB. Even if he doesn't I am not sure there is a QB available that will be worth our top pick.

NT is another area that I think we absolutely MUST address aggressively. Sammie Hill is a key reason we struggle so badly against the run. Getting a big physical guy in the middle is a must.

ILB is another run game upgrade we need. Williamson looks solid, but we need an upgrade to work with him.

DB needs a lot of attention. Safety & CB need upgrades. However, an upgraded pass rush will help the secondary tremendously!! I was a supporter of McCourty, but he seems to be a watcher more than a corner. He is around the play, but is just there to make the tackle. He rarely makes a break up or big play on the ball.

This defense needs a play maker. Casey has had an off year. Teams know he is the only real threat we have. They double him & it takes a lot away from our defense.

I've been saying this for years. We let our best corner go to FA this season.

Verner was our best corner for a year, he had a great year in his contract year. He was solid up to that point, but was not great until his contract year. That is always a red flag to me. If they can have a break out year in a contract year, they can do it all the time and chose not to do so. He has since struggled in Tampa. He was not worth what he would of cost. He has proven that. Letting him walk was a smart decision. Not having an adequate replacement was stupid. Maybe Verner was better suited for TN's defense. I would of liked to have kept him, but not having him has shown that we have to address the position this year. If we kept him it may have stayed hidden. So it may be a blessing in disguise.

Verner was good every year. Most fans who know a little about football could clearly see it.
