This article just came across my newsfeed and it brings up some interesting points about adopting a new system for referees when throwing their flags. Full story

Its actually a good idea. Between Chain Clips, Down Indicators, Equipment Bags, Patches & Flags, Penalty Flags, Throw Down Bags, Towels, Rulebooks, Watches & Timers,Whistles & Lanyards, Writing Materials and whatever else I missed, refs could easily juggle adding another flag to their collection of goodies they need to ref with..

Unnecessary. Literally just for the fans to know as soon as the ref throws it who its going on. Does not change anything for the crew. Whether they whip a steeler towel, a bandana or a magic carpet they wont forget who they are penalizing.

I can't argue against the idea..but I'll argue against the reasoning. Having to wait for the penalty to be announced isnt something to cry about. 9 times out of 10 the announcers will have the penalty figured out before the play is even over. Usually within seconds you know which side is guilty and that would be the only "advantage" another flag would give. Stupid arguement that fans are having to wait to long.

Well yea. How many TD's did you not celebrate because you saw the yellow icon on the TV...? If you saw say a black icon, you'd atleast know its on the other team and you could enjoy what youre suppose to enjoy. I know Ive held back celebrating a Titans 1st down tons of times due to seeing a flag and worrying if its on us or them...

Football is already a slow game, anything that speeds it up a few minutes in the end is good IMO.

How's this speed anything up at all. Refs still gotta meet and announce it.

Its not a game changing move by any means, but clearing up some of the confusion cant hurt. It shouldn't take 7 guys huddled together any longer than a few seconds to announce a foul, in some cases these guys are together for 3+ minutes.

Why do you watch if you're just waiting for it to be over? Plus, it wouldnt speed anything except knowing which side the flag was on immediately. Which you already know in mere SECONDS!

If it was cleared up in mere seconds then no big deal, but its sometimes delayed by minutes..
