That's overreaching a bit but my positioned has softened. I know I have often argued that fans who claim they could be an NFL GM are delusional. I still mostly think that's the case, though I concede Webster has been so bad that it's conceivable a fan could have a similar hit rate in the draft and FA - provided all the extra stuff Webster does that no fan would have any idea how to do (e.g. contract negotiations) were simplified to the point where they were like Madden and not as complex as they are in real life.

Basically, I still accept that Webster is far more skilled at being a GM than any of us but he's so bad compared to other NFL GMs that it may not really matter. If you're a close 32nd out of 32 or a distant 32nd out of 32, you're still the worst in the league.

Yeah I totally agree that there is a learning curb when it comes to writing/understanding contracts as well as all the other fine details and minutia of being a GM.

As far as hitting on free agents and draft picks, I don't think it's a far stretch to suggest that fans could do as well as some GMs.

I will say I haven't been very impressed with the titans fa signings, really ever. I know that contracts play a very big part in who we get and fans know very little about that aspect. But, a lot of big guys we bring in are heavily pursued by other teams also. We just happen to get them and they flop.

I am cautiously optimistic about this fa period. But I do think whiz and web need one more year to prove themselves. If things don't pan out again then I'm all for big fo changes.

The sticking point for me is that the best GMs in the NFL are the guys who find the gems out there. The players no one thinks will have value but who do have value. The Justin Forsetts of the world.

We can all sit here and figure out which big- and medium-name FAs might be good for the Titans. It seems like that's all Webster does. It ends up being the same as searching "top FAs 2015" and just working your way down some list you found on Bleacher Report, signing the best ones you can get. Any fan can do that and have a similar hit rate to Webster.

But a really great GM is so good at evaluating talent that he finds gems and value players. I haven't seen any evidence that fans on a message board are capable of identifying those players.

I disagree (maybe not the message board part but fans in general). If you are a tremendous fan of the college game its very likely you will know many of the latter round draft picks and could have insight regarding "gems" and/or "value" players.

Fair enough. I've seen far, far more misses than hits when it comes to the late-round guys fans want teams to take a shot on.

And the issue is even more pronounced when it comes to free agency. I very rarely see fans arguing for a team to sign an obscure free agent, let alone one who proves to be an overachiever.

Well there will always be more misses than hits when it comes to late round guys, regardless of whether it was a fan picking or a seasoned GM.

At the same time though, just look at any teams draft picks. We have a hit average that's about the same as everyone else. These last 3 drafts have been solid overall especially last year. Should our top picks have more of an impact? Yes, I do believe that Warmack, Hunter, and Lewan will al be very good next year, but atleast they are still playing. Go look at any year first round from 2010-2013, half the players are out of the league or being past around. Drafting is very difficult. FA should be better than what it is, I agree. This is the big year for him, hes getting a shot again so he needs it to be a home run or hes gone. So, lets sit back and watch.

There is no science to knowing if a player is going to suck after you sign them. Bottom line is he signed a player that played well before hand and was touted as the best linemen available. Yes, maybe a lesser known played better, but you can't predict these things. Just like the draft, there are busts and there are gems that no one knew about. It's all a roll of the dice. I must admit that Webster hasn't had the best of luck with his picks in the draft or FA though. Levitre wasnt just a fan favorite BTW...

You can identify which guys fit your scheme, trouble is we really had no scheme coming out of 2012 so it would seem like any solid player would fit since 2013 was a new system.
