Well, i'd say Mett was about a 3rd rnd pick talent-wise so I doubt a late round QB is on his level short of someone dropping quite a lot. What free agent wants to come here to compete with Mett knowing Mett is the #1 guy from day 1? Hoyer? We'd have to give up too much money for that. if you were gonna go that route, you take a QB at #2 and let him ride the bench for a year and start season #2. I don't see that happening as that is tossing Mett off the team in effect because short of injury, he wouldn't start for us again. Is a Hoyer gonna be that much better? i don't think so and neither do the Browns.

Mett worked hard before and after he was named the starter so I don't know why you think his work ethic would change. He knows it's make it or break it for next season. he has one year max to prove himself or watch us draft a QB in rnd 1...assuming we don't do it this year!

I believe that competition brings out the best in any player. So investing money or a pick on competition for mett would be good for him and the team.

The cases of VY and Jamarcus Russell are not comparable to Mariota. The reason is because their failures were because of their off the field issues. Their predraft workouts were simply useful in demonstrating their physical abilities. Mariota on the other hand is no concern whatsoever regarding his off the field conduct. The question regarding him is; does he have the physical ability to be a great pocket passer. Personally I think he may due to his excellent size with good arm strength. The predraft workouts will go a long way towards answering this question.

In general I agree with you...but NOT at the QB position. You can't develop 2 QB's at the same time and if you invest even a mid-rnd pick in another QB or waste $3-4mill in cap space for ANOTHER free agent QB, you are just wasting resources. Only reason to bring in a free agent better than CW is to start...not to give competition. A 4th rnd pick on a QB to develop long term is a waste 9 times out of 10 and we could use a new starting OL, RB or WR or TE or LB or nickel CB instead. Guys who would get on the field and contribute.

You either give Mett the opportunity to succeed this season or you take a QB at #2.

Gotta get a QB this year. It's tough to only win 2 games so we might not be in this position again. There's 2 good QB's at the top that we could take. Even if Mett is our guy at least we can build around the QB position. Maybe our WR's can have breakout seasons with stronger and more consistent QB play.

Plus it would give us depth at the position.

Some holes I think we're gonna have to fill in FA. Maybe go heavy D after the 1st.
The only problem I see with waiting till next season on a QB next season is that you probably don't get a pick as high and you get different prospects.

If there's a QB who you think can be a franchise QB I say you take him at 2. Maybe Mett can be that guy. Either way I think you look to secure that position.

Glad to see you post again. And while I agree with the importance of the QB position (who wouldn't), I completely disagree that there are 2 good QBs at the top to take and I also think you should refrain from arguing too much about "good" QBs...

This QB class is awful.. Winston and Mariota can be great no doubt, but I don`t think they will be. I`d stay away. Go Williams, an obvious plug and play guy for 10 years.

If it were me, Mett would be my starter at the beginning of the season. He'll know it's his job to lose & we'll see how he handles that.

If you guys were to draft Winston, he'd be #3 on the depth chart. He'll run the scout team & he'll be told from day 1 that chances of him starting, or even playing is slim to none in 2015. I want to see how he handles his business. If he impresses, & he's one of those natural born leaders, I may very well change my mind & speed up the "time table" but from day 1, I want him to know what's expected of him & I'm not going to be depending on him too early.

If you guys were to draft Mariota. He's also going on the scout team. The focus will be on his mechanics, taking snaps from under center, turning his back to the defense, synchronizing his feet with his reads, & working on his anticipation, throwing to spots, & things like that.
