Do you care if balls were deflated? I sure as hell don't

My thing is the refs touch the ball after every play and they didn't notice anything. Really

Belichecks last presser was illuminating. So as TJ said, at first he knows nothing about psi or science or anything to do with how the balls are prepared (yeah right). Then he not only knows exactly what he's talking about, he's run experiments. Then he says he thinks that when they are preparing the football to get the texture the way Brady wants, whatever they do (though it's not adding heat in any way), it must artificially increase the PSI....then when they are taken into the warmer air for the official...it's also increased to come out to 12.5. When it's brought back out and the artifical increase goes away, the ball falls back below 12.5. Then when it's in the cold and wet conditions, it drops even more.

So Bill, this means you're doing something to the ball to artifically make it league minimum (when checked) KNOWING it will not be after it is checked. That's called cheating! it was funny a reporter asked them (great question) if they heat the ball or air or anything and Bill wasn't happy. No, no heat but couldn't (read doesn't want to) tell anyone what they actually do.

And BTW, a Sport Bet guy looked at the statistics for the Pats with Brady in cold weather and the stats are truly ridiculous in terms of win, win margin, fumble %, etc. Brave, you SHOULD care. A ball that deflated is much easier to catch and harder to fumble. That's a competitive advantage which equals cheating.

No doubt in my mind the Pats cheated. The NFL needs to do something about it because the same problems that destroyed baseball are now showing up in the nfl.

I agree with everything you say here EXCEPT that he is breaking the rule (if that is what you mean by "cheating"). This sounds like a technicality (and it is), but the rule is silent about the environmental conditions present during the time the balls are tested for pressure. Therefore, when the ball checks out at 12.5 psig in a 75 degree locker room it is as legal as it is if it checks in at 12.5 psig in a 50 degree F environment.

Is he gaming the situation to gain advantage? Absolutely. Is he breaking the rules as written? I do not think so. That is the quandary that the NFL finds themselves in with this situation.

As I have said previously (a few times now), if this is a big deal for the NFL the rule will need to be tightened up (specifying the atmospheric conditions for which the ball is to be inflated and tested, and providing correction factors for deviations from these conditions). Unless they do that, this rule will continue to be "gamed" and the NFL will struggle to enforce it IMO.

What I love is that ONE ball stayed legal among the others. This one ball can ignore atmospheric conditions and equalibrium.

We need to harness its powers.

My guess is that it was inflated higher to start with (closer to the 13.5 psig), either intentionally or by mistake. If someone purposely deflated the other balls below the legal limit, why would they leave the one at the legal limit? Probably for the same reason I make in my first sentence.

Either way I do not think that the one ball being at a higher pressure is of much significance here, since I have no question in my mind that the Patriots pushed the envelope here. I just struggle to see how the NFL has any way of proving that they violated the rules as currently written.

UNLESS that properly inflated ball was marked so that it could be swapped out quickly if needed.

Don't disagree, but I do not see how that changes in either scenario (weather impacting minimally legal balls or purposeful deflation of the other balls below the legal limit)....that is my point.

Again, I do not disagree that the Patriots were pushing the envelope...I just don't think that the rule is specific enough to apply to them here.
