I think something we all need to be careful of is using draft position as an argument to take a certain player, or not to give a player a chance. It’s easy to tell yourself, “We pick at #2, we won’t always have a chance to pick this high and since QB is the most important position we have to take a QB.” When in reality, there might not be a QB there that is worthy of that pick. I think this happened to the Titans when they drafted Jake. He was such a reach and I’m sure part of their logic behind the pick was “We don’t always get to pick in the top 10, so if there’s a QB there we like we should take him.” That logic was obviously faulty when JJ Watt was still on the board and went 3 picks later.

I think the reverse of this is also true. You can look at where a certain player was drafted and immediately project onto him how successful you think he will be because of where he was taken. Back to Jake; I think some of us thought that since he was drafted in the 1st round that he would automatically have a better chance of working out than say, if we had drafted a QB later that year. Also, I think a lot of us have been guilty of associating Mettenberger and his 6th round pick status and automatically thinking, “6th round players hardly ever work out, so Mett isn’t going to work out. And since Mett won’t work out, we need to take a QB at #2 since 1st round QBs work out a lot more often.”

All that to say, don’t use draft position too heavily in your evaluation of what the picks should be or how you think a player will pan out in the league. It’s a good generality to use, but don’t let that heavily influence your decisions. I hope the Titans understand this.

What do people think is Metts ceiling? Joe Flacco level? Thats pretty high honestly. But like Flacco Mett needs weapons. Flacco is as touted as he is because of 2 things, running game and defense, he's usually cast into easy situations. In order to harness the best Mett we've gotta do the kid a favor and tool the team with weapons, taking a QB is like pulling the rug from under Mett. Joe Flacco type QB in TN is a good thing. Winston is a better thing, but Id be shocked to see him slide to us.

I am a Mett fan. However if Mariota is deemed special and say right now doesn't fit our offense, he could backup Mett and learn. The key here is he needed more than say Williams at DL. I don't want any part of Winston. Think that would be a bad choice. This team needs talent, in many areas.

No pick is worth the 2 pick other than a trade.

When you are picking at #2 you need the player to come in and immediately contribute. It doesn't do us any good or make our team any better to have the #2 pick sitting on the bench. If we were going to wait a year for a QB to play, let's just wait a year to draft one in next year's draft that can come in and play immediately (it's a much better QB class next year). It would be the same thing as drafting a QB this year and sitting him for a year, except you would have a player at a different position from this year's draft that's already playing and contributing.

To me, what makes this a tough decision for Webster and Whiz is needing a "Face" of the franchise. They do not have one, and they also have question marks with drafted receivers. If they don't fill seats and turn this around fast, it's only going to get worse and people lose jobs. I like the defensive players, but they don't make the same potential impact.

Mett has the persona to be the face of the franchise, he's willing to do what Whiz tells him is the right way to be a franchise QB, I really believe they're sold on Mett and want to give him a fighting chance to be their guy to make them all look like geniuses. This is where @Riverman's idea comes up as terrifying to me. we draft the guy everyone outside of TN wants and hold him hostage til the trade offers fly in. When that blows up in our face we're stuck with a toy Whiz cant operate.

Hey I agree, you know where I stand. Lets be honest though, Whiz hasn't proven that he can operate ANY player on this team. His roster decisions and play calling has been very questionable. So do you pass on a guy that may get on the field and have that "it" factor, for a coach that may not be here in a few years regardless?....

Like I've said- it requires finesse and balls of steel to pull it off. And it is predicated on Mariota AND Winston having great combines/pro- days etc. I can guarantee you one thing- we WON'T be stuck with Mariota if we take him. Clearly market dependent- other teams ARE interested in having him. And it's just about getting the BEST price for him.

But for chiz sake, let' say the highly unlikely scenario occurs where we take him and nobody offers us ANYTHING we'd take. Just how bad is it to have Mariota? I don't think it is all as bad as everybody keeps saying. Whiz would HAVE to adjust or he's likely out along with Webster. And just how bad is it to have 2 POTENTIAL franchise QB's? If either or both pan out we've got trade bait for next year.

The biggest risk to me is to NOT PARLAY this #2 pick into more. Mariota is really the only likely way we see that happen. It seems more risky to me to draft Williams and he turns out to be a Jadaveon Clowney or another year 1-4 haynesworth. We can get our OLB rusher in the 6-16 slots if we trade back. Going conservative or "safe" is the riskiest play in this scenario IMO. We just have too many holes to fill. And Webster is to blame for that. It's time to damn the torpedoes . An unremarkable "safe" draft this year WON'T save his job.
