By some credible reports, Smith was offered an opportunity to run the Titans in 1997 and 2002 but declined on both occasions, apparently in part because he didn't want to move.

Tommy Smith not required in Nashville - Tennessee Titans Blog - ESPN

"Smith declined a request from Adams, his father-in-law, to move to Nashville in 2002 and take on a bigger role with the team. As a result, he lost a place on the franchise’s masthead."

Memorial set for Titans Owner Bud Adams

"When the Oilers moved to Tennessee in 1997, Adams' son-in-law was offered an opportunity to move to Nashville and help run the franchise, but he declined."

    Tennessee Titans - TeamReport| Reuters

"Smith was given the chance to run the team in Nashville when the franchise first moved from Houston in 1997, but declined because he didn't want to move."

Bud has several grandsons. The one mentioned most often, Kenneth S. Adams IV, has been working with the Titans since 2006 in a variety of capacities. He worked alongside Underwood for several years, being groomed to take over for Bud someday. If he didn't want to eventually run the team, he could have pursued something else in life, as Bud's other grandchildren have done.

I totally agree with this. So glad he threw in the towel if his heart wasn't in it. But it leaves me wondering why in the hell he agreed to take the gig to begin with? Did they seriously have no contingency plan in place for when the 90 year old Bud Adams passed? And if so and this was it, did Tommy not object and make his feelings/wishes known?

I know some look at this as "b****ing no matter what". But the ineptitude at the top of the organization is just so damn frustrating. We basically just had a guy whose heart wasn't in it, and apparently never has been, take control of this team during it's most crucial transition.... only to throw in the towel after a little over a year on the job. Now we're gonna hand the keys to an "interim CEO", who is ultimately going to hand the keys to the "more permanent CEO". And then inevitably I'm sure that CEO is going to hand it over to Bud's grandson.

It's just such a f'in mess and every time you think it can't possibly get any more embarrassing it does. We are never going to turn this thing around if there isn't a clear direction starting at the very tip-top of the organization.

I really hope we bring in a young football mind from OUTSIDE of the organization. IMO if we hire from within as we have several other positions it will be a loss for this team. We need fresh eyes on this team. Eyes that will no longer tolerate the half hearted football we saw last year. Some one not afraid to cause a commotion if things do not go right.

    Just my opinion....

Part of me thinks that this was on Bud...he may have just been too stubborn to admit that they needed a plan (he had no plan on dying or something like that). That is just my speculation however.

At any rate, it is what it is at this point. As I mentioned in a previous post, I think that the family should hire a respected football person with no ties to the Oilers/Titans or no loyalties to current management to a short term consulting contract and have that person evaluate the current situation and make recommendations for organizational moves (should we hire a CEO? Short list? Where located? Should we look to sell? Etc...).

No, there were reports several years ago coming out that he didnt want anything to do with the job at the time.

Could have been an article or could have been a rumor. I dont remember which.
