I've said it several times before but I just can't shake this feeling that LW isn't going to live up to the hype. Maybe I'm being paranoid but I've just seen too many "sure things" not pan out over the years.

He's still a guy I'd love to have but I just don't feel great about using the #2 pick on him when we're staring at Zach Mettenberger as our starting QB. I don't think we're in a position to pass on a potential franchise QB. Even one with as many question marks as Mariota. Just my two cents though.

I'm right there with you. LW scares me too. He does look slow, especially off the snap to me. I have kept this to myself for the most part because he seems to be an overwhelming favorite on this board and I've convinced myself that I must be missing something.

If we stay at #2 and don't take a QB, I think I'd prefer to go White, Cooper, Beasley, Ray or Fowler. WR can have a big impact immediately and I saw one list where they compared the WR prospects from this year and last year and White was 3rd on the list only behind ODB and Watkins. He was ranked ahead of Evans and Benjamin. We really don't have many offensive game changers and difference makers, so I would be completely fine with White at #2.

Here's my thing about LW right now. I'm not going to act like I've watched full tape on the guy because I haven't. I watched his last bowl game and some youtube clips. Honestly, he wasn't THAT impressive. Nothing really seemed to jump out and say wow he's clearly a top pick in the NFL draft. Maybe I can't read DL well or I'm totally missing something. He's pretty technically sound, he makes some nice moves but everything else just seems bleh. Then you throw him in as a 3-4 DE and I just feel like he'll never live up to that draft value.

Then the main argument is he's an instant impact player over Mariota. Okay, long term, what's more valuable? The 3-4 DE that starts instantly on a 2-14 team and the team will continue to go no where in 2015 or a QB with franchise level potential that could pay off in 2016...or even 2015 if he comes out and puts on a show? The whole instant starter argument just doesn't add up, the Titans are drafting for the future of their franchise, not for a starting job in 2015.

Absolutely nothing indicates that Mariota can be a franchise QB

I dont get the hype at all. Even looking at his draft profiles, everyone stretches and does their best to try to make him out to be a prospect.

If we pick him, then its clear this team will never learn its lesson.

I have watched him over and over and tried to like him because its a real possibility we could take him. I have seen nothing... not even a hint of anything showing he can be anything other than a running QB.

LW may scare people, but he wont put the team in the ****house for another 3-5 years.

Lots of QB's do well in college and suck in the NFL.

There are characteristics that you look for in a QB when making a decision whether or not you want to try them as your franchise QB.

Mariota had displayed nothing but legs and character. Go read his draft profiles and look at how much they stretch this guy into possibly being the guy with someone. Taking a QB at #2 as a project QB, is just stupid.

    NFL

Marcus Mariota Draft Profile – NFL.com

Scheme-based quarterback who will face the same challenges that several quarterbacks before him have faced in terms of learning how to read defenses and go through progressions. The tape was less kind to Mariota than expected, but his size, athleticism and consistency of football character throughout his career are necessary traits in becoming a good-to-great quarterback. Mariota's ability to create outside the pocket will help win games here and there and buy him time as he plies his craft. However, to reach his potential and match the play with the traits, he must develop more poise and feel in the pocket and improve his field vision. Mariota is no lock to be a great NFL quarterback, but his floor is much higher than any of the quarterbacks drafted in 2014.

So he needs to learn how to read defenses, go through progressions, get a better feel in the pocket, and improve his field vision.

Thats the definition of a project QB.

WalterFootball.com: 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Marcus Mariota

    • Pocket passing must improve
    • Rarely threw into tight windows
    • Ball placement needs to get better
    • Played in a college system, not a pro-style offense
    • Can look to run too quickly when his first read is covered
    • Must improve footwork
    • Fumbles the ball regularly
    • Will need practice working under center
    • Could use more beef on his frame to help durability

    Project QB

Hype, hype, and hype. Thats all Mariota is. People can warm up to them all they want, but I dont see how his game translates into the NFL at all. If not for his system at Oregon, he would not be in the first round discussions for a QB imo.

You would think that after Locker and Young, we as a fan base would learn our lesson.

I have applied this challenge several times and I will continue to do so.

Why should we draft Mariota, other than the fact that hes being hyped up and we have a chance at a QB?

Fools gold. Too many people have bought into it.

Winston, I could actually jump on board. I dont like his turnovers though, thats pretty bad. He has, however, displayed some of the characteristics that you want out of an NFL QB.

Hes a risk. All picks are a risk. I just dont see the risk/reward with Mariota. Its the number 2 pick and he is not worth it. I will be surprised if anyone actually trades up to take him.
