I don't think we can assume that is the case at all. In fact, what we do know is that Tommy Smith had a ton of faith in those two. And what we also know is that Tommy Smith was basically just forced out of his position by the majority of the ownership group. So if anything that should tell you that not all of the owners were happy with the direction Tommy was taking the team or the decisions he was making.

So for all we know the majority of the ownership group could have very little faith in Ruston Webster and/or Ken Whisenhunt. But at this point it's simply too late in the game to fire someone. If they think there's a good chance Webster is not going to be here past 2015 then why leave your #2 overall pick in his hands? I don't typically agree with ownership meddling but I could absolutely see it happening in this unique circumstance.

That was the initial story. Then "health issues" was mentioned. Then there was a story about there being disagreement among the ownership group which led to Tommy stepping down.

I will see if I can find the article. Hopefully I didn't just make that up.

I do recall something to the effect youre saying, but in the end I kind of just figured he wasn't thrilled running the team, when he backed off the other 2 times since 1997 I saw that as a guy not being interested in football

    Here it is...

    from Wyatt
    from Climer
Nothing definitive. "Sources familiar", etc. But IMHO that seems a lot more plausible than Tommy Smith just up and deciding in mid-March that he doesn't feel like doing this anymore. You have to admit the timing was very odd. Has "forced exit" written all over it IMO.

    He was slightly forced out.

The owner role swapped from Tommy's wife to the other daughter.

The family forced her out of the role so I could see Tommy being pissed off and just saying "**** it" I'm out too.

Yeah that also makes sense. Regardless, I think it's safe to say this wasn't just "I'm old and don't feel like running two companies anymore".

It doesn't even matter the reasoning for leaving his role, he was pretty real bad at it.

No doubt. The whole point to all this was I wouldn't assume the ownership group has a whole has a ton of faith in Webster and Whisenhunt just because Tommy did. There's clearly a lot of dysfunction and differing opinions within that group.

I thought highly of Whiz myself. On top of the resume he brings he's got friends, and in this business its not what but who, and Whiz lured in Horton and LeBeau. I know many arent happy with the defense but keep in mind its a complex defense to begin with and all these kids on our team were 4-3 guys making the switch for the 1st time. Other than Avery Williamson who came from a 3-4? Maybe 1 or 2 others?

I believe in the system we have in place, needs better people in it tho, which if Webster gets right this draft could be promising...
