The question is do other teams believe we are taking Mariota? Or a chance we will? Jets could believe they can stay at 6 to get him or move up to 4 to get ahead of Wash who might take him. The 2 spot is good for teams like Cleveland...NO..SD and Philly to jump ahead and guarantee they get him but do the Titans want to fall that far down? Rams could be interested at 10.

Exactly what I've been saying all along. You just don't pass on a potential franchise QB. Especially when your current starter is a 6th round pick coming off a very ho hum rookie year in which he won zero games (not all his fault of course, but still very much worth noting).

I tend to think Whis really does like Mettenberger and probably does see some potential there. But is he ready to basically bank his job on it? That's where I'm not so sure. Because I think if we are terrible again this year then Webster AND Whisenhunt are very much on the chopping block, guaranteed contract or not. And if Whisenhunt busts out here in TN then I think the likelihood of him landing another HC gig drops dramatically.

Then you add in the ever increasing fan apathy and waning attendance/ticket sales... well, a QB would have an immediate impact on those things. A 3-4 DE, not so much. Sure you can argue that shouldn't matter. But at the end of the day this is a business so it's definitely a factor IMO.

I think Brady would have struggled last season to win as QB of the Titans.

If Webster passes on Mariota, it may or may not mean they're 100% in on Mett. It might just mean they don't think Mariota's upgrade over Mett will have more impact than having a talent like Williams.

We better not draft mariota off the idea that drafting a qb will put butts in the seats. How did that work out with locker?????

We better draft off the idea that winning puts butts in the seat. If any rb can gash the titans d for five up the middle every run, it won't matter if we trade for Brady because nobody wants to watch us lose 7 to 8 home games except for visiting fans.

Oh I agree. I'm just saying zero wins is zero wins. Like I said I'm certainly not placing all of the blame on Mettenberger. Still, you gotta figure a good QB would've at least been able to manage one measly win along the way. Granted he was a rookie so it is what it is.

I tend to think at the end of the day it's all going to boil down to "Do Webster and Whisenhunt believe there's even a moderate chance Marcus Mariota could be a franchise QB?" If the answer is yes, I think they take him.

Right or wrong, I believe there's a lot more to this pick than just "who's higher on our board".

In an ideal world that wouldn't be a factor. But in reality, this is a business and I believe that absolutely could influence our decision at #2.

This team is struggling as it has never struggled before, and I'm not just talking on the field. They need to do something to inject some excitement in this city/fanbase. To be clear, I'm not suggesting they would, or should, draft a QB who they think is a poor/mediocre NFL prospect just to appease the fans. What I am suggesting is they might would take a QB who they have 3rd, 4th or 5th on their board over a DE who is #2 on their board for the sake of putting butts in the seats. Again, I'm not even necessarily saying that's the proper strategy. But regardless of what the fans think the bottom line absolutely does matter to upper management.

Winning cures all, Titans will return to .500 form and be back in the hunt by or before 2016

I agree that a whiff on Mariota would have less of a potential to set us back for as long as the Locker/VY episodes did, mainly due to the lower rookie salary structure that came out of the 2011 CBA (right after Locker was drafted, so it did not affect him). With the new system the money is not as great so it is easier to cut ties earlier (like what we may be seeing with Manziel).

That said, I just see the likelihood of Mariota being another whiff as too high for my taste. I truly hope that Whis and Webster look out for the team ahead of their own futures by not picking him (as I mentioned before, IMO picking him ensures Whis at least 2 more years regardless of performance).

Whis definitely needs to step it up next season for this to happen. I am seeing progress in offseason moves, but last season's game day coaching just scares me about the near future.

Maybe if Whis has another 2014 and our management has the intestinal fortitude to do the right thing after the season we may sniff .500 in 2016....I actually see that as more realistic unless Whis really surprises me next season.
