That pretty much refutes the "Build a Dominant Defense First" argument so many keep making. Look at the Rams and how long they have been rebuilding. They have as much overall talent on their team as SF ever had and even Seattle has now...except for the QB spot. Where would they have been if they drafted Teddy Bridgewater, last year? They would have been in the playoffs, no doubt in my mind.

He doesn't have a strong arm? Really. Since he threw at the combine and his Pro Day, I haven't heard a single person say he doesn't have a strong arm. Some were trying to imply that BEFORE the combine, but not since.

Colin Kaepernick was my favorite QB prospect in the 2011 draft and I wanted us to trade back late in the 1st > pick up an extra 2nd Rd pick in the process > draft Kaep...because he was superior to every other QB in just about every measurable category...except he came out of the Pistol offense, and played at Nevada (not in a power conference).

I saw Kaepernick beat Boise St in his most clutch performance in college. Boise was undefeated and a Top 10 team at the time. He was an Academic All American, broke and still holds NCAA records for passing yds and running yds combined. Some are down on him after this season, but you cannot deny his accomplishments beforehand, and when your HC is being thrown under the bus throughout the season, there is going to be a breakdown in team chemistry and turmoil in the locker room.

I said all of that to say this....most compare Mariota to Kaepernick, but much more polished as a passer. I'll take that ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. And twice on Sunday.

Yeah, If you don't think that a guy will pan out or fit you team, then you shouldn't draft him, regardless of position.

And I do admit that drafting MM is a bit of a risk. Personally, I think he can translate his game to the NFL though.

My main concern is that he will get killed behind our OL. Hopefully his scrambling abilities translate to the NFL

The kid is smart, talented and a hard worker. I really don't see a reason that he shouldn't be able to make it in the NFL.

I think he is a much better prospect than our last 2 QBs.

VY was talented. Just dumb, lazy and had a big ego.

Locker was hardworking, just no talent and not the brightest.

They were both worth taking risks on according the the FO at the time ... why not take a risk on a better prospect than them.

Last year we ran as many 5-step drops as anyone, Whiz loves dialing up those calls, but watching MM throw, his pocket depth is about what it would be in our system. MM in shotgun is theoretically a 5-step drop, he gets the snap, uses play action a lot to hold guys up, and then drops back 2 more steps before launching it down field or taking off. They also used a lot of NOW in Oregon which we dont use, but all the best QB's use it, maybe Mett is just too slow to even try it.

have to admit, MM is worth a 2nd look. I initially watched all his film on draftbreakdown, but now after revisiting him some more, Im seeing little details that do translate..

If Whisenhunt is indeed the QB whisperer so many NFL pundits have suggested, it would stand to reason that he would be one of the best at helping Mariota make a successful transition.

I mean, seriously, teams cannot afford to discriminate QB's on the basis of him playing in a spread offense, anymore. That may be the case 5-10yrs ago, but not anymore. Cam Newton came out of the spread and he's worked out pretty well, despite him not having much offensive help around him.

The way I look at it is this...Mariota is a better QB prospect than Newton was, and Newton went No.1 overall.

I wanted us to draft Kaepernick in 2011, not Locker, but Locker could have done really well for us, even though he had games where he was very inconsistent. His problem was that he was snake bit with injury after injury.

If you guys get a chance, try to watch at least a half of the NC game. This one has just the plays...cuts out all the in-between and commercials. Mariota looks pretty sharp to me, except for a few throws he'd like back (one of them was the DE pushing his TE off his route, disrupting the timing)

Yeah, starting Sammie hill or pito on the line would be ok. Starting both of them is not ok.

Maybe the coaching staff has faith in the 4th round pick last year? Or think mike martiN can still develop?

Still, LW is the best prospect in this draft and we need a stud on the dline...

I still think finding a franchise qb is more important though. Like many have said, a good qb can make the entire team better.

    It comes down to this...

Ruston and whiz have watched the film, the workouts. They interviewed mariota.

If they believe that he can be a legit nfl QB, you draft him and adapt the system as necessary.

If they don't, you try to trade the pick. If they don't get a good offer, you take Williams (or cooper, who I think makes some sense at #2).

I think we end up taking mariota.
