I'll be realistic you are right there is no way to know if Mett would hit those numbers. However it is true that Volek played well at times in 2004 and Mett played well at times in 2014 but the reason these guys can't win a game is both guys played on teams whose defenses were giving up thirty and forty points throughout the season. No QB will win much when their defense is ranked near last.

Billy Volek in 2004 was a good QB but the Titans had the 30th ranked defense in the league. The guy can't win a game because the defense sucks. In a three game stretch they lost 51-24 to Indy,49-38 to Kansas City and 40-35 to Oakland. C'mon,Billy helped the team score 24,38 and then 35 points! You can't win when you give up 51,49 and 40 points, a gazillion points right? Billy did put up good numbers but if the defense would've been better those games would've been won.

Same with Mett he put up good numbers too but you know why he didn't win? A Titans defense that ranked 29th in the league. Again in a three game stretch the Titans lost to Pittsburgh 27-24,43-24 to Philly and 45-21 to Houston. Mett put up good numbers and played in all those games but when you give up 27,43 and 45 points you not gonna win too many games. Again that is on the defense..........

Agree on the trade down....if a good QB comes in the deal. No doubt in my mind that is the best option here.

About the job security thing....practically I agree with you. However, if we take Mariota (new management on board with the choice) and we suck in 2015, Webster/Whis can point to Mariota's development as a reason, and management (who I would assume had bought into the pick) would feel compelled to let the status quo roll a bit longer.

That is my theory on this anyway....

Good to see someone thinking like me here....

And yes, the scenario I have been describing (we pick Mariota, suck, and Webster/Whis get more time because Mariota is in development) is absolutely what I do not want to see happen either. It is, however, very possible IMO.

But a lot a reason our defense gave up so many points is because our offense went 3 and out many many times. And yes the defense wears down. But give Mett credit, we were missing OL and WR in some of those games . To me it's a toss up. Roll the dice. I would lean to finding that QB who can be the guy. If you miss well can try again. But if hit on the guy, you can rebuild a whole lot faster. And it's not like if we draft Mariota, we don't have Mett. It's not one or the other.

For what it is worth (yes I have free time today...holiday for me, yard is still brown so no yard work to do), the Titans had the ball for 26 minutes in the Philly and Houston games, and for 20 minutes in the Pittsburgh game. On average for the season they had possession for 27 minutes per game.

See, this is where an owner that cares is nice.

If I were the owner, here is my thought process...

"so Ruston, you say this mariota kid could be special in the right system. But he doesn't fit whizenhuts system?"

"whiz, how would you use a player like Mariota?"

If I didn't like the answer, I'd hand him the pre written check for his buyout.

    Then I'd call chip Kelley.

"so chip, you don't have the ammo to move to get your boy Marcus. But there are two ways to do it. We're drafting Mariota. Come to nashville and coach him."

You had me until Chip Kelley. If he came in only as a coach maybe....no way could I take his "turret syndrome" GM behavior.

Dont't want chip Kelley , but give me an someone who can adapt to our players strengths. It was like last year we were playing to lose. To see who fit the system . Maybe this year we move forward and adapt some. He will have to or will be gone. If Webster drafts Mariota and whiz is gone, he could say we are building and need more time. I don't think that fits for whiz.
