I am not advocating trading for Rivers, at least for the package that has been rumored. But if you're argument is based solely on arm strength than that is extremely silly.

Strong arms don't make great QB's. Peyton and Rivers are two of the best QB's in the league. That is not debatable. One simply has to look at their stats to know this. They are insanely accurate and get rid of the ball quickly, which are two qualities far more important at the QB position than arm strength.

This is a great article profiling why Rivers and Peyton are so great at what they do:

Swap 1sts and let's do this. You bring in a top QB and suddenly some of those holes will mysteriously disappear. Not saying we're guaranteed a playoff spot but add a WR in the 2nd and a RT in the 3rd then we have a pretty solid offense. With the improvements on defense and an offense not constantly going three-and-out, well look here, now we have a pretty good defense. Throw into the mix that we're in the AFC South and now we're contending for a playoff spot. That means relevancy. That means players may actually want to come here. That means having home field advantage again and actually getting respect across the country that this forum doesn't think is a big deal now but will make 5 threads per week when power rankings and camp coverage schedules come out.

Oh and Phillip Rivers is 33. His age keeps seeming to change on here. He turns 34 at basically the end of the season. For comparisons sake, among Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, Brees is the youngest at 36. Rivers can easily play for another 4-5 years since he doesn't have an over reliance on his arm strength. He's smart with the ball, accurate, does well in the pocket and already knows this offense.

I really like Mariota, like some of you know, but at this point I'll take a proven commodity in Rivers and give him a contract than rebuilding with another QB and hoping he works out. Mariota is already a bit of a project anyway.

I think Webster and Whiz are really stuck. They want to trade for Rivers but if we don't win, they are out fast and we need more than just a qb...especially one that will only be more fragile over time. Did anyone notice we had 3 qb's get injured and 2 of them were knocked out of games twice! So it's not just QB...and if Rivers gets hurt and decides to retire, we will have given away what for what?

This would go down in NFL history as one of the worst draft trades in the history of the NFL. And if we let them keep #17 and say the take Mariota at #2 and Gurley at #17....and we gave the #2 overall pick away for nothing and a chunk of cap space only to retry it again.

I have little faith in Whiz and his Offensive coaching staff at this point except for the TE coach. For that reason, a win now strategy will make us relevant until we show again that we can't win and get our new QB killed.

Theoretically we could get Rivers with #2, a WR at #33, a RT in 3rd, rb in 4th and depth for the rest. That would mean we would have to hit on every pick, current players would have to drastically improve, Whiz would have to remember how to coach and run a good offense and remember what good playcalling is.

There are a LOT of IFs and the potential for Rivers to up and retire is too great of a risk for me. Even if we were swapping first rndrs I would want MORE back AND protection against Rivers retiring over the next 4 seasons.

If I truly believed in our coaching staff Id be all in but I don't. So I think a trade back plan for a boat load of picks, Mariota, LW, Kevin White, or Beasley are the options. If I trade down to the Jets or Bears or Skins or even the Rams, I can still get one of the WR's, one of the top 2 pass rushers (Beasley or Ray), Shelton or even Gurley if we stay in the top 10. Trade down to Browns and we could get great value but be limited in the star potential and position available.

I do think there is a possiblity of a 3 way trade...either between Titans Browns and Eagles or Titans Rams Eagles. I want no part of Foles or Bradford though. I'd prefer trading back within the top 10 as we likely can get a player we'd be considering at #2.

Did you even read my post? How is my argument based "solely" on arm strength? I noted that his heart is not into a trade, I pointed out he could very well retire. I also pointed out that this trade would make sense if we were talking about a younger PR, I don't agree that you re-build with old players.

Oh yeah, and his arm is the weakest in the NFL and yes, that absolutely does matter.

Cleveland trades #12 and #19 to SD for Phillip Rivers (rumored they offered a 1st for Bradford, I feel this is realistic)

SD than trades #12, #17, and #19 to Tennessee for #2 :brow:

Rivers here mentoring Mett could be a nice gig for us now and long term... If we got their 17th pick thats extra good, but no one is handing over a franchise QB and picks IMO
