I listened to half of the games on the radio app.. but that sounds like a coaching philosophy (or problem, depending on how you look at it)

There have been successes with that defensive philosophy. Some teams prefer to sit back in the neutral zone and their own zone to protect the goalie. the sitting back philosophy is called a "trap". But like you said, it allows for easy entry into your zone, and lets their offense set up more easily.

Some coaches try to attack the puck, and try to force turnovers.. but in the process, it can allow for easier shooting and passing lanes, and can make it easier to find holes in the defense.

IMO, I think the coaching staff knew they were outgunned, especially without Weber, so defensively, they were just trying to protect the goalie, and try to minimize mistakes. May have been the wrong way to approach it, but who knows.

The trap absolutely demolished the preds this season. I think the opposing teams figured them out.. The preds were they kind of team to try to get cute and skate through the defense to get a shot.. trapping makes that difficult.

The fact that the Hawks scored all four of their goals off of face-offs should tell you that Laviolette damn well better re-think that strategy next time around.

I agree that goalies wear down and need rest... but it's the playoffs and Hutton would've been a disaster IMO.

Regular season was a different story. I felt Pekka needed more rest in the last quarter of the season.

IMO, backup goalie, or goalie of the future has to be a top priority, if Hellberg or Saros aren't it.

Looks like the Preds are in decent shape moving forward. Hate to see them choke like they did in the playoffs, but not surprised. Hawks can turn it on quickly. A few big decisions for them this offseason

UFA Fisher and Ribeiro must be re-signed. I don't think this will be a problem at all. Fisher with Carrie here and a new born, no reason to leave. Ribeiro with his wife and martial problems want/need to leave here. Don't see why he would want to leave. If we offer them fair contracts, they will stay.

RFA Wilson, Jarnkrok and Smith all should be resigned. Wilson and Smith will cost some money, but are two top 6 wingers. Cant let them leave. We have a bit of money and can sign them. We need to.

Big problem still is not having that big, solid #1 center that can take face offs and can score (not gaustad). There are no good options in FA so itll have to come from trade. The best option is Ryan O'Reily from Colorado. Had 55 points last year. Will cost us a yound D man, mostly likely either Ellis or Ekholm, and a prospect. We should make it happen. We are close to being a even better team. Hopeful lines for next year

    Forsberg - O'Reiley - Neal
    Smith - Fisher - Wilson
    Fiala - Riberio - Jarnkrok
    Stalberg - Gaustad - Bourque

    Weber - Josi
    Jones - Ellis
    Bartley - FA/Rookie

Trading within the division is risky and quite possibly stupid.

Ellis is cheap and has great potential. And I don't think RoR is really a good #1 center. We'd be creating one hole on the roster, trying to fix another.
Preds have tons of good forwards coming up. Sissons, salomaki, Aberg, arvidsson, fiala, Watson..
And the pipeline for Dmen coming up is poor. Outside the people currently on the Preds, there are maybe 2 possible NHLers if they're lucky. (Diaby and Alm are long shots.)

Agree, trading in the division is tough, but we have no centers coming up. They are all wings. Watson is not a #1 center either. That is what has been costing us in these games and holding us back. We have a great top4 D lineman for years in Weber, Josi, Jones Ellis/Ekholm. Third line D man are easier to obtain than #1 centers. Ekholm is a RFA and will be attractive as well as Ellis. Its worth giving one of them up plus one of those wing prospects. We don't really have room for them either. With Smith and Wilson hopefully signing contracts soon and Fiala and Forsberg not going anywhere, our top 2 line wingers are already here plus Neal. Its worth the chance I believe.

Also, Franson said he wanted to stay, not sure that will happen unless he takes a small discount to stay, which he might. If that happens, almost guarantee one of them are traded.

Yeah, I'm not convinced Watson will ever be anything higher than a 3rd line player, tops..

Franson and Santo should both go.. that trade was a bust. It's too bad that both of them had expiring contracts.. so preds can't flip them for anything at this point. Not Poile's most shining moment.

Wilson and Smith were both technically Centers, they someday may fill in one of those roles (hopefully) If they get re-signed at all. I hope they do.

I'm sure Fisher and/or Ribeiro will get more than a 1 year deal, so that leaves us in the next few seasons at Center with
    Fisher/Ribeiro
    Jarnkrok
    Gaustad

With Sissons and others in the minors.

I could definitely see Fisher take a hometown discount (due to them loving Nashville, and the baby here) and Ribeiro taking under market value to stay as well. He sought out Nashville.

I just don't know who Nashville could bring in that would really fix everything. If there were someone, I'd be all for it. Statsny was the hope last year, and he wasn't too great for the Blues this year.

I'd also rather keep Jarnkrok at C, too.

If Weber could be moved for a king's ransom.. I'd be all for that. For 1 or 2 good D men and a top 2 Center, I'd go for it.

I wouldn't mind putting Jarnkrok at the wing for a few years. He played his best hockey last year when he was on the wing. I could see Riberio playing #3C if we trade for a no1. (I want to keep smith, fisher, Wilson together) and have Fiala and Jarnkrok on the wings. That's some speed and playmaking ability there. Something we didn't have this year,

Don't see Weber being moved. His salary is now starting to come down a bit. We saw us without him last week, I don't like it that much.
