Everyone in camp is competing...even Mariota. The time any rookie or young player feels he doesn't have to compete we've got a problem...I was talking about Mett's comments weeks ago and his willingness to compete...

From Jim Wyatt, Mett is already back in the building working out and watching film. I highly doubt he asked to be traded. That seems like a agent thing to me. He said earlier that he will work to compete with them. I still like him a lot and think we could still workout here. Glad he going to still come in and compete. Just hope this doesn't turn into RGIII/Cousins situation.

Saw that. It really is in his best interest to keep a positive attitude (at least publicly) about all this and just go out there and compete. I still think he can be a very good backup and borderline starter in this league. If he keeps working and improving he will get his chance, be it here or somewhere else.

I'd still be firing that agent if I were him. What a stupid, stupid move.

    Probably wasn't really his agent.

    It was Lewan all along.

I could literally see Taylor being more butt-hurt about the pick than Mett himself.

McNair was taken #3 and didn't start for 2 years. It does happen even if we don't like it.

    That was the plan though.

If we go in to yesterday thinking Mariota is good enough to start day one and then Mett beats him out, we screwed up.

That's not going to happen though. Even if Mett beats him out slightly they'll start Mariota, as they should. The difference would have to be monumental for Mett to start without injury.

Cant disagree more. The longer learning time the better IMO.

I can cherrypick examples from each side.

Jake Locker didn't start a single game his rookie year. Steve McNair started two. The amount of passes thrown as rookies were 80 for McNair and 66 for Locker.

Aaron Rogers sat. Peyton Manning played.

You can only learn so much on the bench. Unless you are surrounded by an awful team, I think if you're going to make it then you're going to make it.

    Maybe...

But we still wouldn't have screwed up that bad.

Chip would be willing to trade a pretty penny for Mariota even if he clearly busts. How often can you say that?

If Mett somehow outplays him, in my eyes, it means he got divine intervention in the off season. Not sure how you feel about Mett, but we clearly disagree on Mariota. He will be an elite QB.
